Support VNet data gateway connections in Power BI Report Builder (Get data / Power Query)

Power BI Report Builder can't use a VNet data gateway connection. In Get data (Power Query), the Data gateway field shows "none" and can't be changed, so the query goes straight to the source over the public endpoint.

We run Azure Databricks with public access disabled. Fabric reaches it through a VNet data gateway, and semantic models on that gateway work fine. In Report Builder the same connection isn't offered, and Databricks returns 403 Forbidden. Microsoft support confirmed this is a feature gap (case [2608271410000352]).

What we'd like:

  • Get data in Report Builder offers the gateway connections the user has access to, VNet gateways included.
  • Paginated reports that use a Power Query dataset run through that VNet gateway connection once published to the service.

Why it's needed:

  • VNet data gateways already work for semantic models, Dataflow Gen2, pipelines and mirroring. Paginated reports on private sources are left out.
  • The paginated reports docs list VNet gateway support for SQL Server and SQL Server Analysis Services only.
  • The workaround is a semantic model between the report and Databricks. That is an extra model to build and maintain, with a 10-minute timeout on DirectQuery report queries.
  • Opening Databricks to public access isn't an option for organisations with private networking rules.
