Reporting Services and Power BI reports on SQL Server 2017

Hi everyone,

I have a server with a SQL Server 2017 installed. I want to know if it's possibile to use the product key of the installed SQL Server to install SQL Reporting Services.

However, I have also the following questions:

- Which licence of SQL Server allows me to add the licenced Reporting Services? Can SQL Server Standard Edition allow me in this purpose?

- If I've SQL Server Standard Edition installed, what kind of licence can I install of Reporting Services?

- What's the difference beetwen install Reporting Services to publish PowerBI reports and install Power BI Server for the same purpose? Are they the same features or not? Which would be the best way nowadays? Consider that now I'm working with Power BI Desktop (August 2018) to design the reports.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi

Both SQL Server EE or Std allow SSRS to be installed

Power BI Report Server, is a superior version because you can publish reports of PBI.

Now the licensing of Power BI Report Server requires
    - SQL Server EE + Software Assurance
    or
    - Power BI Premium

    best regards

  • Hi

Power BI Report Server does not include SQL EE.
But, it can require and install components such as Analysis Services (not visible), and like SSRS require a SQL server (2008 or more) for catalogs and task planning

      Thank you for your answer.

      One last dubt:

Does Power BI Server Premium Edition contain SQL Server Enterprise inside the installation?

I saw that to set a scheduled refresh of data into a report with Power BI Server, you must have SQL Server Agent active and it feature isn't available in the SQL Server Express Edition.

      Thank you in advance.
