Power BI Report Server Upgrade

Is it possible to upgrade old version to the latest version available?

    Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community forum.

    Yes, Power BI Report Server supports an upgrade process. Before upgrading, Microsoft recommends backing up the encryption keys, report server databases, and configuration files.

    To upgrade, run PowerBIReportServer.exe, select Upgrade Power BI Report Server, accept the license terms, and select Upgrade.

    After the upgrade, make sure report authors use the version of Power BI Desktop for Power BI Report Server that matches the upgraded server.

    Hello jijianish​ 

    •  
    • Direct in-place upgrades from older versions to the latest Power BI Report Server release are fully supported by running the latest PowerBIReportServer.exe installer and choosing Upgrade.
    • You do not need to uninstall your existing version beforehand; the installer automatically detects the current instance, retains your configuration, and updates the binaries in place.
    • Always export a backup of the Symmetric Encryption Key via Report Server Configuration Manager before starting, as it is required to restore access to saved credentials and connection strings if a rollback is needed.
    • Take a full database backup of both ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB on your SQL Server instance, and save copies of custom configuration files (rsreportserver.config, web.config).
    • Immediately update Power BI Desktop to the matching Power BI Desktop for Report Server version across all report author machines, because reports saved in newer Desktop editions cannot be published to older server builds.
