Power BI & Reporting Services - current state?

Hi,

i'd like to know, generally speaking, the current state of the art about how Power BI & Reporting Services relate.

More specifically:
1) PBIX files can already be shared internally through PBI Server in an organization? Or is it supposed to use SSRS 2016 for anything?
1.1) The experience through PBI Server is different from the PBI service, for example, no Q&A and no dashboards?

1.2) Does Microsoft intend to give, through PBI Server, a similar experience like the one online through PBI Service (with Q&A, dashboards, etc..)?

2) Is PowerBI Service supposed to allow publication of SSRS reports?

3) What the h*ll happened to Datazen? Is it integrated in SSRS 2016, and will it live, since PBI and SSRS seem to become more and more integrated?

Finally, what should be the Microsoft plan for these 2 software in the future? Will they end up like only one software - BI Reporting Services - an hybrid solution both working in the cloud and on premisses?

Kind Regards

    Hi Anonymous,

    1) PBIX files can already be shared internally through PBI Server in an organization? Or is it supposed to use SSRS 2016 for anything?

We can grant permission for users to access reports in web portal: Grant user access to a report server. You can also vote the idea about create a subscription for report: PBIRS subscriptions.

1.1) The experience through PBI Server is different from the PBI service, for example, no Q&A and no dashboards?

Power BI report server on-premise doesn't support Q&A and dashboards feature currently.

1.2) Does Microsoft intend to give, through PBI Server, a similar experience like the one online through PBI Service (with Q&A, dashboards, etc..)?

You can vote on this idea: Support dashboards in Power BI Report Server.

    2) Is PowerBI Service supposed to allow publication of SSRS reports?

We are not able to publish SSRS reports to Power BI service, while we can publish the pbix in Power BI report server to Power BI service.

    3) What the h*ll happened to Datazen? Is it integrated in SSRS 2016, and will it live, since PBI and SSRS seem to become more and more integrated?

Regarding Datazen, you can check this article: Announcing End of Support for Datazen Products.

    4) Finally, what should be the Microsoft plan for these 2 software in the future? Will they end up like only one software - BI Reporting Services - an hybrid solution both working in the cloud and on premisses?

Regarding this question, maybe mgmeyer and riccardomuti come from PG team have information?

Are you aware of a way to enable subscriptions on a Desktop file? The link you have does not specify Desktop files, and in my experiance the subscriptions option is disabled for the Power BI Files on Power BI Report Server...

I just have a point of clarification here as well. While you cannot publish a report, you can pin certain visual element from the RDL reports to the Power BI Service if you have a Premium license. In this manner, you can connect your on premises reports to the Service.

        Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for your reminding. I have modified the first point in my previous post. The subscriptions for Power BI report server is under review, please vote it up. :smileyhappy:

Anonymous In addition to Anonymous's pin SSRS items to Power BI. You can go through this article: Pin Reporting Services items to Power BI Dashboards.
