Weird visualization issues within a workspace

Hello everyone,

I've been facing an issue since a couple of weeks ago that I'm not able to solve (From mid Jan 2024). For all the reports in a workspace, I constantly get complaints from users that cannot correctly visualize all the charts:

I do not experience any issue at the Power BI Desktop nor the Power BI service (I'm Admin), so I hadn't been able to reproduce the problem.

It is noteworthy that the visualization issues are experienced by certain users subject to the Row-level security (RLS) feature. Admins have no problem to see the data. I use a lot the RLS feature for other reports in other workspaces with no problem whatsoever. So, I don't know what could be the root cause. Disabling the RLS is not an option as this is a strong business requirement.

If helpful, data is being pulled from an Excel file in SharePoint. No other data sources are present.

When experiencing this problem, some people say that they have to refresh the webpage several times in order for the visualizations to display correctly. But I'm not certain about that.

I have already updated my Power BI Desktop version and republished several times, granted build permissions to all users, disabled the automatic refresh, users have updated their Power BI versions, but the issue persists... for this workspace.

Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciate it as this is driving me nuts.

Best regards,

Daniel

    Hi Anonymous

Indeed this is a Weird behavior when a user must refresh the page many times in order to see data correctly.

How many users applied to the RLS? do you use security groups for your RLS in the service?

      Hello aj1973 / Amine:

Thanks for your reply! There are about 50 people within the RLS scope, and I do not use security groups. I have added each user to each role individually.

Please let me know if you need further information.

      Best regards,

      Daniel

        Hi Daniel

If I am not mistaken that's 53 users assigned to the RLS ! could it be a User is mapping multiple roles at the same time ? Like Anonymous said you might need to optimize the RLS logic.

On the other hand and in my Opinion you should think using Security Groups instead, Know that the Maximum UID that you can add in a workspace is 100, and this is set by MSFT for a reason. 50+ users in your case is already a high number espacially maybe if the Workspace is not under premium capacity.

The issue in your case is certainly latency somewhere and i can see your report contains many cards in one page. You might want to optimize it as well, like reduce visuals per page or use the Multi-Row-Card visual for all your Top Cards instead of one by one...

    Hi Anonymous ,

Is there a case where a user maps multiple roles, if so, try optimizing the RLS logic.

    Hope it helps!

      Hello Anonymous / Scott,

Thank you for your reply. I optimized the RLS logic as recommended, but I am afraid that it did not solve the issue. Any other ideas on what might be happening?

      Best regards,
