Title: Power BI Matrix — How to Show Subtotal Only at StudentID Level, Not StudentName Level?
I am using Power BI Desktop October 2026, version 2.159.883.0 (64-bit).
My Matrix visual has:
- Rows: StudentID → StudentName → Subject
- Values: Total Marks
My data model contains a student master table and a student transaction table, related by StudentID.
I want to show:
- StudentID 101 subtotal = 258
- StudentID 102 subtotal = 166
- StudentID 103 subtotal = 180
- StudentName subtotal should not appear
- Subject-level marks must remain visible
- Grand total = 775
I enabled Row subtotals and used Apply settings to → Per row level. However, when I select StudentName and turn Show subtotal off, the StudentID subtotal also disappears.
How can I achieve this in my Power BI version? Please provide the exact navigation for this version or a verified alternative. I can provide screenshots and a sample PBIX file if needed.

The option you are looking for is the: "Apply settings to" and "Per Row Level" options under the Row subtotals. Here you can disable the sub total at individual levels:

Row subtotals = On
Per row level = On
Hi subratapal2311,
The replies above are pointing to the correct setting, but based on your description I think the important part is verifying the per-level configuration itself.
Microsoft’s current Matrix format settings documentation states that Per row level lets you control subtotals independently for each level of the row hierarchy.
For your hierarchy:
StudentID → StudentName → SubjectI would configure it as:
- Row subtotals = On
- Per row level = On
Then use the Row level dropdown and set:- StudentID → Show subtotal = On
- StudentName → Show subtotal = Off
- Subject → Show subtotal = Off
If you do not want 775 at the bottom, also turn Row grand total off separately. That should leave only the StudentID subtotal rows.
One thing to watch is that the main Row subtotals toggle must remain On. You only turn the subtotal off for the StudentName and Subject levels from the Row level dropdown.
If you have configured it exactly like that and switching StudentName off still removes the StudentID subtotal in Power BI Desktop 2.159.883.0, then that would not match the currently documented per-row-level behavior.
In that case I would test the same setup in a brand-new matrix with only StudentID, StudentName, Subject and Total Marks. I would also expand all hierarchy levels while testing, because Microsoft notes that expand/collapse can affect subtotal rendering.
If the simplified matrix reproduces the same behavior, please share a screenshot of the Row subtotals pane showing the StudentID and StudentName level settings. That would help determine whether this is a formatting-state issue or a possible regression in the current Desktop build.
