For 2026/2027, I would build the roadmap around strong analytics fundamentals first and then add AI as a productivity layer rather than starting with AI.

A practical order would be:

1. Excel + analytics basics
-> Learn cleaning, formulas, pivots, descriptive statistics, KPIs, and how to translate a business question into an analysis.

2. SQL
-> Be comfortable with joins, filtering, aggregations, CTEs, window functions and troubleshooting queries.

3. Power BI
-> Learn Power Query, data modelling/star schemas, relationships, DAX measures, report design and performance.

4. Business communication
-> Practice requirements gathering, explaining findings clearly and turning analysis into recommendations. This becomes even more important as AI makes basic chart/report creation easier.

5. Power BI Service and security
-> Understand workspaces, semantic models, refresh, RLS, sharing and governance.

6. Microsoft Fabric basics
-> I would then learn how Power BI fits with OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, Dataflows and Pipelines. You do not need to become a full data engineer, but a modern analyst should understand where the data comes from and how the platform fits together.

Microsoft's current Power BI Data Analyst study guide is actually a good checklist for the core skills: preparing data, modelling data, visualizing/analyzing it, and managing/securing Power BI.

7. AI-assisted analytics
Finally, learn Copilot and other AI tools for generating/explaining DAX or SQL, exploring data and accelerating report development. Microsoft's Copilot in Power BI learning module is useful here.

The important part is not to let AI replace the fundamentals. You still need to recognize a bad join, incorrect measure, misleading visual or questionable AI-generated conclusion.

For projects, I would build 3-4 end-to-end portfolio pieces rather than dozens of small dashboards. For example:

raw data -> SQL/Power Query -> clean model -> DAX -> Power BI report -> business recommendations

Then add one Fabric project showing how the data reaches Power BI from a Lakehouse or Warehouse.

If certification helps you stay structured, PL-300 is still the most directly aligned Microsoft certification for the Data Analyst role.
