"Upgrade the current Power BI license to view the report" Error

Hello Power BI Community,

We’re facing an urgent issue with our Power BI Pro License. Since last Friday, we’ve encountered an unusual error while attempting to publish Power BI dashboards to our workspaces. Specifically, 7 out of our 13 workspaces are currently not functioning and display the following error message:

"Upgrade the current Power BI license to view the report."

This issue is critical, as several of our active clients rely on accessing these dashboards. We’re seeking guidance on how to resolve this matter swiftly.Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? Any advice or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi @anushhp1997 ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

@Akash_Varuna Thank you for your quick response.

Thanks for sharing the details. That does seem unusual. A few things you might want to check:

  • It's possible your Power BI admin has set up an automated process or policy that keeps switching the workspace back to Premium Per User (PPU).
  • If the workspace was created during a PPU trial, it might be stuck in that mode unless an admin manually changes it.
  • Also, make sure you're a workspace admin, if you're not, any changes you make might not stick.

I'd recommend checking with your Power BI tenant admin to see if there are any settings or scripts affecting license types. They can try changing the license mode from the Admin Portal. If even the admin can’t fix it, it might be worth raising a ticket with Microsoft Support using the below link.

Hi @anushhp1997 Usually, this happens due to licensing issues or incorrect workspace access configurations. Ensure all users have the required Power BI Pro licenses and that the workspace is assigned to the correct Premium capacity. Check user permissions and reassign access if needed. If the problem persists, verify service status or contact Microsoft support.

@Akash_Varuna Thanks for your response. Yes, I understand that it's pertaining to the Power BI License and its configurations. Although, we are using Pro License, few of our Workspaces has been updated to 'Premium Per User' License Configuration, which is unusual. Even if I try to switch the License Configuration to 'Pro' it gets reverted to 'Premium Per User' license in sometime. Have you encountered this error?

@anushhp1997 The Premium Per User (PPU) license, requires PPU licenses for access. You should escalate the issue to your global admin since you already tried to set the liscence to Pro and its reverting to PPU. The global admin can verify if there are organization-level policies or automated settings causing the reversion and resolve the conflict. If unresolved, contact Microsoft Support for assistance.
