Question on How to update Power BI report server License renewal

Hello,

We just renewed our Power BI license enterpise edition with software assurance. I am not sure what to do with the renewal certificate. We are using the Power BI un-premise server.
Is there anything I should do with the renewal certificate to ensure uninterrupted operation?

Thank You

@M_nwadibia There is nothing you need to do on Report Server itself. The existing key you entered when you originally installed Report Server will continue to work.

@d_gosbell Please I need Specific information on Power BI report server License renewal. I understand you have been using Report server for sometime. We are renewing our license the first time-(SQL enterprise license with Software assurance). What specific action do I need to take to ensure my reports continue running. I got a suggestion but didnt find the part given in report server.

Hi @M_nwadibia ,

I suggest you can try this step:

  1. Review the Renewal Certificate:

    • Carefully examine the renewal certificate. It typically contains essential details such as the expiration date, license type, and renewal confirmation.
    • Confirm that the information matches your organization’s requirements.
  2. Check for License Activation:

    • If your Power BI server is already running with the previous license, the renewal certificate should automatically update the license status.
    • However, it’s a good practice to verify that the new license is active. You can do this by checking the Power BI server’s license settings.
  3. Apply the Renewal Certificate:

    • Depending on your setup, you might need to apply the renewal certificate manually. Here’s how:
      • On-Premises Power BI Server: Log in to your Power BI server and navigate to the license settings. Look for an option to upload or apply the certificate.
      • Azure Power BI Service: If you’re using the cloud-based service, visit the Azure portal and manage your Power BI licenses there.

Best Regards,

Hello,

I have checked the Report Server Portal and their is no license setting. Can you guide me to how to locate it?

@M_nwadibia you may want to try the below.

Renewing your Power BI license with software assurance ensures that you continue to receive updates, support, and other benefits associated with your Power BI subscription. However, if you're using Power BI on-premises (Power BI Report Server), you typically won't need to do anything specific with the renewal certificate to ensure uninterrupted operation. Here's what you should keep in mind:

  1. Check Expiry Dates: Ensure that the renewed license or certificate does not expire soon. This helps avoid interruptions in service due to an expired license.

  2. Update License Information (if required): In some cases, you may need to update the license information in your Power BI environment. However, with Power BI Report Server, the license is usually managed through the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Configuration Manager. You can check the license information there and update it if necessary.

  3. Stay Informed About Updates: As part of your software assurance benefits, you're entitled to receive updates and new releases of Power BI. Stay informed about these updates to take advantage of new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements. You can regularly check the Power BI release notes or subscribe to notifications for updates.

  4. Maintain Software Assurance: Keep track of your software assurance renewal dates to ensure continuous access to support, updates, and other benefits. Failure to renew software assurance may impact your ability to receive support and updates in the future.

  5. Backup and Disaster Recovery: As a best practice, regularly back up your Power BI Report Server databases and configuration settings. This ensures that you can restore your environment in case of any unexpected issues or failures.

  6. Monitor Usage and Performance: Continuously monitor the usage and performance of your Power BI environment to ensure optimal operation. This includes monitoring server resources, report performance, and user activity.

  7. Stay Compliant: Ensure that you remain compliant with licensing terms and conditions. Review the licensing documentation provided by Microsoft to understand your rights and obligations.
