Import and DirectQuery are two data connectivity modes how Power BI will connect and bring data to explore.
When using DirectQuery mode in Power BI, the data is not imported into Power BI, but rather queried directly from the data source. As you create or interact with a visualization, Power BI Desktop sends queries to the data source directly to get the data needed by all visualizations on a page. This can be useful for large datasets or when real-time data is required. However, it can also result in slower performance and longer load times.
When you choose Import as a connectivity mode, it brings all data from data source to Desktop. As you create or interact with a visualization, Power BI Desktop uses the imported data. You must refresh the data, which imports the full data set again, to see any changes that occurred to the underlying data source since the initial import or the most recent refresh.
If you have switched to Import mode and are experiencing long load times, it may be due to the size of your dataset or the complexity of your queries. You can try optimizing your queries or reducing the size of your dataset to improve performance. Additionally, you can consider using incremental refresh or partitioning to load only the data that has changed or is needed for your analysis.
It's also worth noting that switching between DirectQuery and Import mode can result in longer load times as the data needs to be reloaded and processed. It's important to carefully consider the mode you choose based on your specific needs and requirements.
