Different Ways To Display Hyperlinks In Power BI Tables

Did you know there are multiple ways of displaying hyperlinks in a table/matrix visual?

You can show hyperlinks as the full URL, an icon, or even format text from another column to include the hyperlink. These hyperlinks can direct users to a website or navigate to a different page within the same or another Power BI report.

Blog Outline:

  1. Create a Hyperlink in Power BI Financial Dashboard
  2. Create a Visual with the Hyperlink
  3. Display the Hyperlink as an Icon
  4. Format Text to Include Hyperlinks

Create a Hyperlink in Power BI

To create a hyperlink in Power BI, you need a column in your dataset that contains URLs. Follow these steps to format the URL column:

  • Open Data view in Power BI Desktop.
  • Select the column that contains the URL.
  • Go to the Column Tools tab, and under Data Category, choose Web URL.

TipIf your dataset does not have a URL column, you can create a custom column with the desired URLs and format it as a Web URL.

Create a visual with the Hyperlink

Once your URL column is formatted, you can create a table or matrix to display the hyperlinks.
  • Switch to Report view in Power BI Desktop.
  • Add a table or matrix visual and include the field you categorized as a Web URL.

Display the Hyperlinks as an Icon

If you prefer not to display the full URL, you can configure Power BI to show an icon instead.

Format the texts to have the Hyperlinks

To display a column as formatted text (rather than a URL or icon) with the hyperlink embedded:

  1. In Data view, select the column that contains the URL.
  2. On the Column tools tab, select Data Category. Make sure the column is formatted as Uncategorized.
  3. In Report view, create a table with the column you’re going to format as link text.
  4. With the table selected, select the Format icon to open the Formatting tab.
  5. Expand Conditional formatting, making sure the name in the box is the column you want as link text. Locate Web URL, and turn it to On.

In the Web URL dialog box, select the field that contains the URL in the Based on field box.

Power BI gives you the flexibility to present hyperlinks in various formats, enhancing the interactivity and user experience of your reports. Whether you choose to display URLs, icons, or embedded text, these options enable you to create cleaner and more user-friendly visuals.
