May 2024 Update - Issues with Manage Relationships and Sort By Column

I updated recently to the May 2024 version.  After installing, I had problems with both Manage Relationships and Sort By Column.  When trying to Manage Relationships, Power BI threw a message:

"Cannot perform interop call to: MinervaDialogHost_modelingServiceHostService.ExecuteDataQueries......"

Likewise, when trying to use the Sort By Column under Column Tools, Power BI threw a message:

"Cannot perform interop call to: exploreClientInteropHost_modelingServiceHostService.ExecuteDataQueries......"

To fix both issues, I have reverted back to March 2024 version and the above functionality works fine.  I work on a Windows Server 2019 with much free space.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @MaineGuy1993 ,

Can you provide detailed version information so we can reproduce the issue? We'll get back to the product team as soon as it's acknowledged as an issue!
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I have reverted back to the March 2024 version, therefore I no longer have the detailed May 2024 version information.    However, I updated from the MS site on Saturday, June 1st the 64 bit version onto my Windows Server 2019 Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.5696).

Below is the full error message received when trying to create a relationship between two tables.  After reverting back to the March 2024 version, this relationship caused no problems.  Also, please note that I used the Model View icon to manage my relationships.  When I used the Manage Relationships icon under the Modeling ribbon, it was unable to show any fields in the tables where I wanted to create a relationship.  In fact, any table I chose it was unable to show any fields.

Below is the full error message I received when trying to use the Sort by Column functionality under the Column Toos.  Again, after reverting back to March 2024 version, this caused no problems.  This is a simple sort where Monday = 1, Tuesday = 2, Wednesday = 3, etc...:

These issues are not specific to one Power BI.  I have approximately 25 different Power BIs with over 250 different reports.  I tried in several different Power BIs and received the same error messages.  Interestingly, none of my previous relationships or previous column sorts are impacted.  They appear to all be working.  I just can't create new relationships or column sorts.

I realize this is really two different issues.  But both issues are due to my update to the May 2024 version.

Thank you for your help

Hi,

I'm having the same issue too in the same two situations - manage relationships and sort by column. Are there any known interim solutions other than a roll-back to the March 2024 version?

Regards,

Charlie

Hi All,

Since I have received no further information from MS, I have reverted to using my laptop to develop instead of on the Server.  I do not have the same issue on my laptop, but I have other downsides.  It takes much longer to load a PBI from the Server and it takes much longer to save to the Server.  It is frustrating and I really don't like workarounds, but at least I can work.  I am also able to update to the latest version of PBI Desktop.  I don't need to work with the March version as my latest version.  However, again, this creates an issue.  I need to ask my IT department to install the lastest version of PBI when one comes out.  I don't have the necessary rights to do my own installs.  😞

Any updates on this issue? I have been having this issue on PBI Desktop from the last 3 releases too. Our  Admin team recently rolled out verison Version: 2.132.1053.0 64-bit (August 2024) and I am having this issue with this new version too.

MS never responded to this issue.  As stated above in my 8/18/2024 comment, that is still my solution.  Frustrating to say the least.

Hi all,

@MaineGuy1993 @ruchita_manuja @Tech122 @ellenzhu5

Did a more thorough Google search for a potential solution after I couldn't update and save changes to a data model without the file being impossible to re-open - fine for colleagues but not myself. Anyway, I then found this.

Power BI : Desktop client errors - Mattias De Smet

Not an approved solution I don't believe so proceed with caution, you may also need admin rights (I believe I did).

The issues outlined mirrored the ones I was experiencing. Worked through it and applied it about a month ago now, the problems I had been having have been resolved and have had no further issues. Still able to update PBI desktop and run the latest version without a problem too.

Would recommend having a read through. Hopefully it helps out others while a more permanent fix is worked on by MS.

@Chally92 , this worked like a charm.  I did not find any other processes using that specific directory.  I renamed the directory.  Updated my PBI to the latest version.  All seems to work just fine with setting a sort by column and setting a relationship.  No error messages.

Thank you for your suggestion and research.  It is much appreciated!!!
