Moving from trial to paid capacity

I am about to move from trial to paid capacity.

I need to move my code (workspaces) and was wondering if there is a guide to follow somewhere.

I noticed that the capacity I move to needs to be in the same region which might be a problem in my case.

Are there workarounds? Can I change region for my trial capacity?

Once I am on my paid capacity can I then change to reserved capacity or do I then need to create/buy a new capacity?

What is the process for doen- or upgrading capacity level? Can I do that without creating/buying new capacities?

I am currently trying to migrate trial to paid capacity via GIT

Not yet sure if it works/how much of my needs that are supported

Hi @joakimfenno

This documentation should answer some of your questions well. I quote part of it as below:

Moving workspaces from one capacity to another, has the following restrictions:

  • When you move a workspace, all jobs related to items in the workspace get cancelled.

  • Workspaces with non Power BI Fabric items can't move from Premium or Fabric license mode to Pro or Premium Per User license mode.

  • Non Power BI Fabric items can't move between regions.

This means the following:

  • Moving a workspace from one capacity to another within the same region

If the workspace has non Power BI Fabric items, you can only move it from one Premium or Fabric capacity to another Premium or Fabric capacity. If you want to move the workspace from Premium or Fabric license mode to Pro or Premium Per User license mode, you won't be able to do so unless you delete all non-Power BI Fabric items first.

If the workspace has no non Power BI Fabric items (that is, it has only Power BI items) moving the workspace from Premium or Fabric license mode to Pro or Premium Per User license mode is supported.

  • Moving a workspace from one capacity to a capacity in a different region

If the workspace has no non Power BI Fabric items (only Power BI items) then moving the workspace to another capacity in a different region is supported.

If you want to move a workspace that contains non Power BI Fabric items, you must delete all the non Power BI Fabric items first. After the workspace is migrated to a different region, it can take up to an hour before you can create new non-Power BI Fabric items.

For the other questions, here are the answers:

Are there workarounds? Can I change region for my trial capacity?

The trial capacity is always created in the home region of your tenant. You cannot change its region. Additionally, changing the region of an existing Fabric capacity or a Premium capacity is not supported either. The capacity is tied to the region it was initially created in.

Once I am on my paid capacity can I then change to reserved capacity or do I then need to create/buy a new capacity?

Which type of "reserved capacity" do you refer to? Currently there are four types of capacities: Power BI Premium, Power BI Embedded, Trial and Fabric Capacity. You can’t directly change the type of an existing capacity (e.g., from Fabric to Premium or Embedded). However, you can create a new capacity of the desired type and then move your workspaces to this new capacity. You can delete the old capacity if you no longer need it.

What is the process for doen- or upgrading capacity level? Can I do that without creating/buying new capacities?

You can resize existing capacities without creating a new one. For Premium and Embedded capacities, you can resize them in Admin Portal > Capacity Settings. For Fabric capacities, you can resize them in Azure Portal. For Trial capacity, this is not supported.
