SharePoint data source - authentication method service principal
Hello,
I see that the authentication method 'service principal' can be used to authenticate to SharePoint Online but it does not seem to work for me to authenticate. My data source is just a List in SharePoint Online.
These are the permissions that I have. Which permissions do I need more to get this working?
Kind regards

Hello @Anonymous,
I have discussed this issue with Microsoft Power BI support and it is a bug that should be looked at from their side.
Kind regards

Hello @naelske_cronos ,
Do you have more details regarding this bug ?
Will Microsoft Power BI team fix the Service principal authentication method for a SharePoint connection ? If yes, do we have an idea when ?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards.

I have also encountered this issue and would be interested in hearing if there's any way to track progress on it with Microsoft

There are a few Ideas related to this that could use some upvotes:
- Service Principal as authentication type for SharePoint folder
- Add AAD Service Principal as a method of authentication
- Fabric SharePoint Data Connector for Microsoft Graph API using Service Principal Account
- Service principal with Power BI and Data Gateway
There are many more out there, but these were the ones that were most relevant to my own development needs. 🙂

Hi @naelske_cronos,
The snapshot shows the error message that provided credentials is invalid. Did you used the same type of credentials when you design power bi report and connection to the data source?
AFAIK, they should be matched or these credentials not able to be used and power bi will also notice credentials are invalid.

Hello,
In Power BI desktop it is not possible to use service principal as authentication method, only in Power BI service.
It is working via the other authentication methods like OAuth2 but not via the service principal?
Kind regards
