Hi RosieL,

Thanks for your response, and good to hear regarding the June and July update notes, I think that should resolve some of the more serious issues with the new interactions.

To feedback on certain points above:

  • Quote: This with the existing option in the Options > Report settings menu to have "suggest a visual type by default" unchecked should give you the classic view, with the field wells expanded, you see today.
    • Response: Yes I'm aware of that option and tested it as well, thank you, but still found it less intuitive and more time-consuming to use/reference versus having a fixed pane with that same info on the right (where I can also easily control the width of the view), so very glad to hear the option to restore the usual pane experience is planned.

  • Quote: Sounds like from the 2nd, are you referring to entering format mode with the double click and thereby the pane switcher switching to the format pane?
    • Response: Yes it's based on that, but also generally speaking, in the work that I do, quickly comparing elements such as the exact position of various page items (slicers, data visuals etc.) in quick succession is a daily practice, and I rely on being able to have the pane show the same data as I quickly click through several items when doing this (either in a separate Selection pane or the items on the page in data view), so the pane (and sometimes card) switching on it's own is an option I'd like to toggle off (but also it would be great to be able to separately switch on/off the core on-object interaction itself, as I can see scenario's where I would like to leverage that feature in isolation.

  • Quote: Could you share a gif of 3rd bullet behavior? That would help us understand the problem.
    • Response: I'm not able to right now, but can produce one next week if required, however my explanation above will hopefully suffice, as it's essentially the same case for the different visualization types in the standard 'build menu'. To give one scenario for it's use: Often I have to navigate files for UX/UI work which are new to me, and so it's sometimes impossible to know for sure until clicking on objects on each page which is which (for example, is this item a button, or a converted shape, or a text box etc., maybe a card and so on...). In this use case, having a stable, static pane of reference on the right makes it very easy to quickly see what I'm dealing with, and it's a 'one-click' interaction, nice and simple, no effort. In the new 'on-object interaction', there is an extra click each time I want to see this information, which is unintuitive, plus the frame of reference is literally changing each time I move from one visual to the next.

As a single interaction, I can appreciate it seems a minor issue, but iterated over dozens of objects on multiple pages in the midst of a UX/UI workflow, it can cost a surprising amount of time in total.

Do let me know if you still require that GIF though, thanks again!

When a visual is selected the graphics to do with on object interaction appear over the query editor window, making it impossible to read the query. I appreciate that they should appear over other visuals on the page but they shouldn't obscure the query window.

Hi johnt75,

Thank you for letting us know about bugs like this. A fix for this is in the works. We are in agreement that on-object interaction shouldn't be obscuring the query window.

I have found a bug when using On Object Interaction.  I am running Version: 2.116.884.0 64-bit (April 2023),  On-Object Interaction Preview Selected.

I find that Data Summarization no longer works correctly when you select the column from the old data view and then use the column tools tab.

Summarising using the Build a Visual in the new On-Object Interaction does work, see below. Right clicking on the data in this visual does work

However, trying to use data summarisation on the column tools tab doesn't work. It lets you choose the type of summarisation, but does not apply it.

Just letting people know cos I have a complicated model and thought the problemwas with that.  So after some time trying to fix my model, I tested on a simple table and found its the Power BI software.

Thanks

Thanks for reporting. This will be fixed in the May build.

Turned off, tried it, but found it was taking too long to get things done. Not a fan. May need to spend more time when I don't have actual work to get done.

Hi m-colbert,

There are some solutions in the works based on the feedback shared in the forum and other means. Please stay tuned for our June update

Not Really a fan.  I think effort should be put on bringing in new functionalty that people request or AI on generating DAX code, rather than glossy usability features.  Thanks.

Hi rockingmark,

I saw your other post for the bug you found. Thanks for that.

As the team looks like into features that help the spectrum of our customers, efforts in one area doesn't necessarily mean that efforts in others area diminished.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what is happening in the world of AI for generating DAX code since I've worked on earlier features in that area

I'd like to take back to the team areas of improvements and this was a large update. Can you let me know which parts of the feature you found to be unnecessary, or if you have a mix of likes and dislikes. This will help the team in prioritizing updates in the future

Turning off the preview because it does not work on text boxes - I need to remove the header icon to meet our deployment standards.

Also experienced formatting "On object" disappearing. More specifically, this happened on a table after I expanded the formatting pane on the side and then closed it. The only way for me to open formatting again was to click on another visual, expand the "formatting on object" to the side pane, and then click back on the table again. The formatting pane persisted on the side pane and the formatting "on object" did not return on the table.

Thanks- I appreciate this space to give feedback.

Hello - could you share more details on the disappearing you're seeing? You should be able to enter "format mode" which will give you on-object subselection regions by either right clicking or double clicking on any visual type. Perhaps a gif or screenshot of what you're experiencing will help us better understand the issue. Thanks

Very confusing.  Please return it to the way it was, or include an option to use the existing pane structure.

Hi storphid,

Could you let us know which parts are confusing for you? That helps use what updates we should be working on in the future

Please stay tuned for our June update. We are incorporating feedback for the pane structure

Having the Data pane available on the right would majorly help; its move to the On-Object is challenging from an old-way versus new-way of the development experience. User toggle for showing Panes invidually versus the new "pinned (small icon)" style would be nice. Also really enjoy the updated bubble corners for re-sizing visuals.

Hi sphillips-analy,

Please stay tuned for our June update. There should be options you are looking for by then. Glad you are finding the bubble corners for re-sizing helpful

It's probably me but where'd the ability go to define page drill through fields? Looked and couldn't find them so disabled the feature, made my drill through changes, and them re-enabled the feature.

Thank you for linking, I was wondering the same thing!

Not sure if this is helpful feedback but in general not a huge fan at all of the new feature - it drastically reduces the speed of development.
If however the plan is to keep it please make it an option and create the ability to pin the different views (selection/bookmark/data/format etc) so that we can see multiple of them at a time.

I ran into an issue today where I was trying to update 2 bookmarks with selected visuals only and it was extremely difficult because I didnt have the ability to select the visuals within a group in the selection view and needed to do it on the cavnas view instead.

Happy to meet and show you how this worked/the impact it had.

I'm doubling back to this post to try and plea with the Microsoft team to completey abandon this idea, or at least have the ability to turn it off. I appreciate innovation and progresss but this is just truly terrible and there appears to be consensus as there isn't a single bit of positive feedback here.

I understand that this may have cost the product team considerable time and money but that isn't a reason to propagate bad ideas or ideas that just didn't work.

Delete it.

The first thing I noticed as well in a very similar scenario!

You can get the top-level panes to display next to each other, but it requires additional clicks (not good UI) to access the 'feature', as shown below:

D_M_0-1682588411915.png

The problem I have with this new 'option' is that it's not a default setting we can at least control (in terms of the general UI behaviour), and if you've set up all of your panes and then accidentally click on the wrong object/icon, it will immediately revert back to single pane only (save the Filter).

If we could implement the 'Open in new pane' item as a permanent preference in the main settings (or in any way that would make it permanent/persistent in the application generally), that would go a long way to solving multiple issues with this new UI concept, but currently it feels like a somewhat fragile/temporary workaround rather than a robust option.
