Hi @SaloniVyas

Thanks for using Microsoft Fabric Community.

In addition to @NandanHegde.

When creating a new connection for Cloud resources in MS Fabric, the checkbox "Allow this connection to be used with on-premises data gateways" determines whether the connection can be used to access on-premises data sources through an On-Premises Data Gateway (OPDG).

What is an On-Premises Data Gateway (OPDG)?

  • An OPDG is a software component that enables cloud-based services, like Power BI, Azure Logic Apps, or Microsoft Fabric, to securely access on-premises data sources, such as databases, files, or APIs, without requiring a direct connection from the cloud to the on-premises environment.

What does the checkbox do?

  • When you check the box "Allow this connection to be used with on-premises data gateways", you're allowing the connection to be used as a bridge between the cloud and your on-premises data sources through an OPDG. This enables the following scenarios:
  • Hybrid data access: You can use the connection to access on-premises data sources from the cloud, while keeping the data sources behind your organization's firewall.
  • Data integration: You can integrate on-premises data sources with cloud-based services, such as Power BI, Azure Logic Apps, or Microsoft Fabric, without exposing the on-premises data sources directly to the internet.

When to check the box? Check the box if:

  • You need to access on-premises data sources from the cloud.
  • You want to integrate on-premises data sources with cloud-based services.
  • You need to keep your on-premises data sources secure behind your organization's firewall.

When to leave the box unchecked? Leave the box unchecked if:

  • You only need to access cloud-based resources and don't require access to on-premises data sources.
  • You don't have on-premises data sources that need to be accessed from the cloud.

By understanding the purpose of this checkbox, you can make informed decisions when creating connections for Cloud resources in MS Fabric.

I hope this infromation helps.

Thank you.

Some cloud sources can be hosted within a Vnet, so in order for you to access those sources from Power BI service; you might need a bridge(gateway).

So the above option helps you access those source within power bi service via gateway

Hi @NandanHegde, Thanks for the response, but I am still trying to figure out how it actually works in real-time scenarios. Can you please explain it in more detailed form.
