Power BI Challenges Now On Its 9th Leg

We’ve started the 9th leg of our Power BI Challenges, this time focusing on currency conversion.

There’s so much conversation within the Enterprise DNA Forum on this topic that we decided it’s about time we dedicate a challenge to it. As you probably know, we aim to keep things interesting by highlighting different industries every challenge. This proves how dynamic Power BI really is as a tool.

Challenge #9

In Challenge #8, we looked at Power BI insights from Jira reports. This time, we had to dig deep into our archives to find a challenge worthy of your time.

Using an actual dataset from our records, we’re asking participants to produce a report that would allow users to choose a specific currency and see the associated sales and cost.

Haroon provided more information that would help participants understand the requirements further. He talked about the business in the scenario and how it involved a business that buys and removes scrap and waste recyclables from clients and sells these to other providers. He also mentioned that this was a company that operates in different countries, thus the need for the ability to use different currencies in their reports.

The problem was further broken down, with the key columns listed and the top rows extracted from the dataset.

Basically, the final goal of the report is to help remove the hassle of having to manually convert data each time.

Deadline for submission is on November 16, 2020.

The Power BI Challenge

The Power BI Challenge started out with a handful of the people in our forum sending in their submissions, hoping to not only win the prize, but to create great conversations around the different solutions being delivered.

But these challenges have gone a long way since then. Now, even those who are not yet part of the community are actively participating in the challenges. Even more exciting, we’ve made changes to the newcomer prize to encourage more rookies to jump in and start getting the hands-on Power BI training they need.

Brian Julius has been kind enough to sponsor the newcomer prize in the past few challenges. Now, we’re limiting the people eligible for the newcomer prize to those who are joining the Power BI Challenge for the first time.

We’re also adding a few more prizes for the winning newcomer. The winner gets to win any of the following:

• A copy of the Definitive Guide to DAX, 2nd Edition (the indispensable “DAX bible”) or your choice of any other book from the eDNA Forum Recommended List 4; or
• A copy of SnagIt 2020 3, a do-it-all screen capture and graphics tool used by the members of the expert team for screen grabs, annotation, gif and video generation, photo editing, etc.; or
• A four-month subscription to FlatIcon.com 4, an online service with millions of downloadable and editable icons that you can use to really polish your Power BI reports.

This category is open to everyone and anyone no matter what background or experience. However, you must be an Enterprise DNA member, an intern or part of the scholarship program to join in.

As for the challenge winner, you get a complimentary membership to Enterprise DNA Online, which you can share with anyone who you think deserves to unlock even more amazing resources that could level up their Power BI game. You also get the chance to have your work featured in the Enterprise DNA portal through the Power BI Challenge Showcase.

Now that we’re on our 9th leg, we’ve come to expect that the submissions would be even better than the last batch.

To decide on the winner, we use the 4 pillars of a great Power BI report as basis:

• Data loading and transformation
• Data modeling
• Reports and visualizations
• DAX calculations

We’ve seen considerable improvement in the way participants are creating their reports,

a testament to the fact that these challenges really do help participants level up their game.

This makes choosing a winner for every round a huge challenge for the team.

2. Post your report on the thread.
3. Submit your PBIX files to powerbichallenge@enterprisedna.co

When you submit your report, just use the subject line Power BI Challenge 9 – Name (Member). If you’re not a member yet, use the subject line Power BI Challenge 9 – Name (Non-member) instead.
