Discover Clusters and Patterns in Your Data Using ...

We'll work through some advanced analytics examples for Power BI during this particular article.

Firstly, I want to show you how you can discover and showcase clusters in your datasets. To be able to do this in Power BI, we need to combine some modelling techniques and formula ideas that will enable us to create some dynamic grouping within our datasets.

Within this tutorial, we run through exactly how to create a supporting table with some MIN and MAX values within that table that enable the segmenting of our results based on whatever values we provide. From there, we're going to work with a calculated column logic to workout which group our particular customer sets.

By doing this, we can identify our clusters within our data, but they can be self-generated. They can be easily manipulated based on what visual or insight we want to show.

I'm hoping that by working through this tutorial you'll see the many uses of all of the techniques combined here. There's lots of ways that you can reuse some of the modelling and formula ideas within different scenarios and examples that you're likely working with.

In this next example, I'm going to show you how you can discover patterns in your data. Some of the techniques here are actually quite similar. But we're going to take things another level and do stuff slightly different in terms of how we implement the logic into our Power BI tables.

I'm also hoping that you can see the reusability of all of these combinations of ideas. There's lots of insights that you can discover by using similar concepts and techniques in your own data model.

If you do, then you can discover lots of unique insights and be able to dynamically show them based on any calculation that you may want. You could be analyzing sales, profits, profit margins, or profit growth.

With all of these great insights, you could then be advancing them more by implementing these grouping techniques and supporting table techniques to extend the analysis that you are creating.
