Query folding is one key conceptโwhere behind the scenes, part or all of your M code may be rewritten into the data sourceโs native query language then offloaded to the source for execution. Streaming, though perhaps a less familiar term, is even more fundamental, as it describes how table data (as well as list and binary data) flows between functions in M. In this session, we will look at a common budget allocation problem that involves seasonality. Seasonality has a major influence on many businesses. The ability to factor in seasonality in budgets and forecasts could help to create clear and meaningful comparisons with actuals. Allocating a high level budget to lower levels of granularity, on the other hand, can be difficult. I'll demonstrate how to split seasonal budgets utilizing Power Query. This will allow us to compare the budget on a quarterly, monthly, and even daily basis. At the end, I'll demonstrate how to use dynamic DAX calculations for effective budget-to-actual comparisons. Power Query is a fabulous tool for cleansing and then loading data into Power BI and Excel. The UI is excellent and it lets you do almost everything you can imagine just by clicking on the menu options. Yet under the hood of Power Query is a very powerful functional language called โMโ. There is now Intellisense that supports the M language in the UI, but you can also learn a lot about how the language works by using the UI to teach you. Hybrid Tables in Power BI Hybrid tables, a new addition to Power BI, are a game changer in that they provide the best of both worlds by allowing one table to have two storage modes at the same time! Before the introduction of Hybrid tables, each table in Power BI could only have one storage mode: Import which loaded data entirely into Power BIโs memory or DirectQuery which left data in the back-end data source. When working with near real time requirements, Power BI developers had to use tables with DirectQuery; however, DirectQuery by itself could result in less than optimum query performance for large datasets and put a burden on the backend system. Hybrid tables combine the two storage modes and therefore provide improved query performance for historical data by loading them into memory (Import) and provide near real time capability for recent data (DirectQuery).
