The dataset for this brief had no layers - it was completely flat. If it had more dimensions to work with, a choropleth or another data-driven map would have been the obvious route. Rather than adding layers to enrich the data, I wanted to treat it as a challenge: can the visualization itself still tell a story when the underlying data is flat? The approach I took was to focus on presentation over discovery - treating the dataset as something to frame rather than something to mine. A subtle key-click accompanies the typewriter as a small extra layer of texture - a first for me in this series - and it can be turned off from the panel. Miniviz May, Week 4 | Maps: Time Changes So Does Government
This visualization explores how political regimes have shifted across the globe over nearly two decades. Using the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index (2006–2024), each country is classified into one of four regime types (Full Democracy, Flawed Democracy, Hybrid Regime, or Authoritarian Regime) and plotted on a filled map to reveal the geographic patterns of governance. Year and regime type slicers let you step through time and filter by category, making it easy to track how individual countries and entire regions have drifted toward or away from democracy over the past 18 years. Excited to share my submission for Miniviz May - Week 4! This week’s prompt asked us to use a map to show a pattern or difference across locations, keeping it simple with one measure or category. To do this, I mapped one of the biggest economic stories of our lifetime: the shift in global trade dominance. The Data Story: Using a simple binary category, the maps track whether a country's larger bilateral goods trading partner was the USA (Blue) or China (Red). 2000: The U.S. clearly dominated global trade across most continents. 2025: A massive pattern shift occurs.
