MIniviz May Week3 Challenge
Overview This entry visualizes a full 168-hour week across 9 life areas using a hierarchical treemap. Each top-level tile represents a major category (Sleep, Work, Social & Family, etc.), sized proportionally to total hours spent. Nested within each tile are sub-categories, further broken down to reveal how time is actually distributed at the activity level - three layers of granularity in a single glance. The What-If Interaction The standout feature is the "What If" filter bar along the bottom, which lists all 9 life area categories as pill buttons. Selecting one (or several) removes that category from the base map entirely and redistributes the remaining 168 hours proportionally across the surviving tiles. This lets viewers instantly explore questions like: What does my week look like if I reclaimed Sleep time for something else? How large does Work loom when Social & Family is excluded? How much of my waking, non-work time goes to Entertainment vs. Health? Rather than adding a separate chart or filter panel, the What-If mode transforms the treemap itself — the tiles dynamically resize, making the redistribution viscerally tangible in a way a table or bar chart never could. This treemap visualization explores how time is distributed across different areas of life. Although work dominates the week, meetings consume more time than deep work, revealing how productivity can often be hidden behind busy schedules. The visual highlights the balance between work, personal care, entertainment, health, learning, and social life using a clean and accessible design.

Attached is my submission for Miniviz May 2026 week 3, which is a treemap visual of time spent. I used the same sample data that was given but changed the main statement at the top and used different colors. For the tool tip, I added both the summary measure for the "Hours" field and the DAX expression that sums "Hours". Also, for the "Hours" field, it seems that using the summarized field or DAX expression to sum the hours provides the same result. Both are added in the tool tip well.
