(Date updated to 1 June 2026) Data Engineers in Toronto May 2026 Semimonthly Meeting Topic: Data Modernization at Traditional Banks - From Legacy Mainframe to Cloud Abstract: As technology evolved from the age of industrialization to the age of information, and finally to this current age of AI, the average lifecycle of technology shrank from 10 to 6, and now it is 3 years. Therefore, the definition of “legacy” has shifted. Applications developed before 2010, especially those built on mainframes or outdated technologies, are increasingly seen as candidates for modernization. Mainframe transformation has been a top priority in financial services because of its operational inefficiencies and high maintenance costs associated with mainframes when compared to modern distributed systems. Still, the majority of the core processing engines within financial services depend on Mainframe as the mission-critical business rules are embedded Speaker: Vishal Sharma, VP - Software Engineering at Broadridge Speaker Profile: As a Software Engineering leader, I bring over 20 years of expertise in enterprise architecture and digital transformation. I want to know if we are using on-cloud Power BI service then our client wants the server to be in their geographical region. (E.g. Suppose our software will be hosted in the UK region, the on-cloud report server will be in the UK?) Trying to get a sense of which Power BI Service (cloud) functions are available in Power BI Report Server (on premises), and which are not. The following Power BI Service functions appear to be absent in Power BI Report Server (August 2017 preview): Power BI Datasets Authoring new reports directly from the web (Power BI Report Server) Dashboards Generate Automatic Insights from the data Show related content (From the context of a selected Power BI report, identify other reports on the Report Server that are derived from the same data source) Subscribe to emails when data for a report is updated Get data alerts when dashboard data passes certain limits Show Report Usage metrics Share report to an email address Show who has been granted access to a report Schedule refresh of Power BI Report data Refresh Power BI Report Package Report content as an App And probably other items. If any of these items are available in Power BI Report Server (August 2017 preview), please let me know, and/or explain how to use that feature. Good morning, We're managing our cloud infrastructure for some clients. We're using AWS EC2 instances. In particular, we've launched an instance (new virtual machine) with Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Full Locale English with SQL Enterprise 2016 SP1 AMI provided by Amazon. The instance runs SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Edition and all licensing is included in the AWS subscription and managed by Amazon. This means that the virtual machine is activated using digital licensing. Using a powershell script, I could obtain a product key but doesn't work when activating Power BI Report Server. For obvious reasons, I don't have access to the MS licensing portal, as it is managed by Amazon. Bottomline is: we're paying for SQL Server 2016 Enterprise licensing and all related costs, included within the virtual machine subscription. Anyone could please share experiences activating this product on cloud infrastructure? I've already opened a support ticket with AWS, but they're still scratching their heads ;-) Thanks, Pablo.4.6KViews1like2Comments
