For the August #DataDNA challenge, I developed a Power BI report focused on understanding fraud exposure, fraud drivers, and operational risk across a digital wallet ecosystem serving the African gig economy. The objective was to move beyond reporting metrics and answer three business questions: What is the current risk exposure? What factors are driving fraud risk? Where should controls and monitoring be strengthened? To support this analysis, the report was structured into three sections: Executive Risk Overview Assess transaction performance, fraud exposure, disputes, and reversals. Fraud Driver Analysis Identify the customer, behavioural, and transaction characteristics associated with elevated fraud risk. Operational Risk & Controls Evaluate dispute patterns, reversal behaviour, transaction timing, and market risk indicators to identify opportunities for intervention. Key Observations Fraud exposure was more closely associated with customer behaviour, transaction type, and channel usage than demographics alone. USSD channels and Cash-In transactions consistently recorded elevated fraud rates. Month-end periods showed increased cash-out activity and reversal risk. Observed fraud exposure did not always align with expected market risk levels. Most financial dashboards are scoreboards — they show what the numbers are but never why they matter or what to do about it. I wanted to build one that thinks like a CFO instead. This is a dynamic three-statement dashboard (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) built on a star-schema model across three fiscal years. The idea behind it: every page opens with a plain-language verdict a CFO could read in ten seconds, and the whole narrative recomputes when you change the year. A few things I focused on: Headlines that lead with the problem. Written in DAX — e.g. "Behind plan — net income materially below budget" — rather than burying the miss under a growth figure. Driver-and-action insights. Instead of "revenue below budget," the dashboard reasons from the data to "behind plan on volume, not cost — re-baseline the plan." A CFO Attention panel that surfaces the single most actionable finding (like a rising collection-time trend with cash tied up in receivables) as a named, color-coded alert. Custom SVG KPI cards rendered entirely as DAX measures, for layout and conditional formatting beyond native visuals. Built with a shared set of "signal" measures that compute severity once and drive every page consistently — SWITCH, ISBLANK guards, and variance decomposition doing the narrative logic.
