The 1% Truth - What Really Defines Movie Success?
1,464,566 movies. Only 0.42% have sufficiently reliable data. And there is no universal definition of success. Does a movie that earns millions automatically win over audiences? Can a small-budget production become the real success story? What happens when financial performance and audience appreciation tell opposite stories? The 1% Truth transforms cinema data into an interactive visual investigation. The report compares three different measures of success: box-office revenue, return on investment, and audience rating. EXPLORE THE REPORT Home: Discover the central question, key figures, and starting point of the analysis. The Funnel: Follow the journey from 1.4 million movie records to the small subset considered reliable enough for analysis. Three Lenses: Compare success through revenue, profitability, and audience appreciation. Success Disagrees: Explore movies whose financial performance and audience reception tell conflicting stories. Limits: Test how the minimum vote threshold affects the results and uncover the dataset's main biases and limitations. BEFORE YOU EXPLORE Page filters for release period, genre, original language, and audience rating apply only to the current page. Rankings and indicators are recalculated according to the active selection. A movie is considered reliable when it has at least 200 audience votes and both its budget and revenue exceed 1,000 dollars. Null and zero financial values are treated as missing data. Financial values are not adjusted for inflation. ROI is calculated as (Revenue - Budget) / Budget and does not include marketing or distribution costs. Correlation indicates association, not causation. This report does not attempt to identify the best movie. It reveals how data tells different stories depending on how success is defined. eyJrIjoiYTMyN2IyMGEtYTUyZi00NTFlLWE4NzktNjg4NzU3YjljZWM2IiwidCI6ImU0OTZjYjg0LWU1ZDctNDQ2Yy04MTMzLTVkZjU5NzljZjE5MCJ9&embedImagePlaceholder=true177Views8likes1Comment
