Report Design Studio: design a Power BI theme and page layout on a live report (free)

Hi everyone,

Making a report look good in Power BI usually means formatting every visual by hand, writing a theme JSON in a text editor, and hoping the colours are readable for everyone. I wanted one place to do all of it on a live report, so I built Report Design Studio. It's free, it runs in your browser, and there's no account: tools.benibix.com/data/report-design-studio

Watch it

Short overview video: the whole tool in a few minutes

Report Design Studio playlist: step-by-step lessons, from your first theme JSON to an accessible, fully styled report

Here is what it does, and at the end there's a sample theme you can make in one click.

1. Colour, four ways

Palettes: 65 curated palettes, including colour-blind-safe sets such as Okabe–Ito and Paul Tol

Harmony: generate a palette from one base colour

Extract: pull a palette out of an image, such as your logo (read in your browser, never uploaded)

Build: set every colour by hand, lock swatches, and make sequential or diverging ramps

2. Every visual, all at once or one at a time

Simple mode styles every visual together: borders, corners, shadows, padding, gridlines, data labels and legends

Advanced mode styles one of 27 visuals at a time, including buttons and shapes in their hover, selected and pressed states, plus the report wallpaper and the filter pane

One font for the whole report, and the preview shows the visual you are editing

3. A page layout, not just a background

Navigation (an icon rail, a sidebar, a floating sidebar or a top bar), a title bar, a slicer panel, sections of tiles and a footer

8 starters and 7 page sizes, for Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio and Full HD

Download it as a PNG page background, a layered SVG or Copy for Figma (every zone a named layer), or one PowerPoint slide of editable shapes

4. Readable for everyone

Every colour is checked on its own visual's card against the WCAG 3:1 floor for chart marks (1.4.11), with APCA shown beside it

A matrix flags colour pairs people could confuse

See the live report with protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia or in greyscale

One click nudges failing colours until they pass, keeping them apart from each other

5. Export, import and share

Theme JSON, checked against the Power BI theme schema before it downloads, so Power BI won't reject it

A matched dark and light pair, a swatch sheet PNG, and design tokens as CSS variables, SCSS variables or Figma and W3C tokens

Import an existing theme JSON to edit it. Settings the studio doesn't edit are kept and written back into the export

Share a link that holds the whole design in the address itself, or save presets in your browser. Undo and redo work as you'd expect

Everything runs in your browser. Images, imported themes and exports never leave your computer.

Free sample: the Deep Space theme

To show the result, here is Deep Space, the dark theme in the pictures. To get it, open the studio, pick Deep Space under Palettes, and choose Export, then Theme JSON.

8 data colours: #B18AF4, #F7B340, #22B1F2, #8CD817, #6A94F1, #FAA8B6, #14B8A6, #E4C9FC

Every data colour is at least 5.7:1 against the card (WCAG asks 3:1 for chart marks), and the text is 13.8:1

Good, neutral and bad colours for conditional formatting, card borders with 8 px corners, and Segoe UI throughout

To use it: in Power BI Desktop, go to View, then Themes, then Browse for themes, and pick the file.

I'd like your feedback

What's missing for your reports? Is there a visual you style by hand every time, or an export you'd want? I read every comment, and I'll build what comes up most.

Power BI last year compares the wrong weekday? (Tiny Fix 8)

If your last-year measure uses SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR on a date column, Power BI compares each day with the same date last year, not the same weekday. 7 March 2026 is a Saturday, but 7 March 2025 was a Friday, so every day is compared with the wrong weekday.

The recommended way is calendar-based time intelligence (preview). A calendar compares by week, so the Saturday of week 10 meets last year's week 10 Saturday:

File, Options and settings, Options, Preview features: select Enhanced DAX Time Intelligence, then restart Power BI Desktop.

In the Data pane, right-click your Date table, then Calendar options, New calendar.

Year = Week Year, Week = Week, Date = Date. Validate data, then Save and close.

Point every last-year measure at the calendar: SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR ( 'Retail weeks' )

Check: before, Saturday +127% and Monday -50%. After, every day lands between +7% and +15%, and the bars line up.

Trap from my test: start the date table on the Monday that begins week 1 (30 Dec 2024 for 2025). Mine started on 1 January and every comparison slipped by two days. Calendars don't work with live connected or composite models yet.

Microsoft Learn: https://learn.microsoft.com/power-bi/transform-model/desktop-time-intelligence

Why does my Power BI slicer show items with no data? (Tiny Fix 7)

Pick North in a Region slicer and the Product slicer still lists all 10 products, even the 4 that North never sold.

Why: a slicer lists every value in its own table, and the relationships filter one way, into Sales, never back.

Microsoft advises against switching the relationship to Both for this. Filter the slicer instead:

Click the Product slicer and open the Filters pane.

Drag your measure (Total sales) into Filters on this visual.

Under Show items when the value, pick is not blank, then Apply filter.

Check: before, 10 products. After, only the 6 that North sold.

Microsoft guidance: learn.microsoft.com/power-bi/guidance/relationships-bidirectional-filtering

AI‑Powered Report Migration: Tableau to Power BI Part 2

Can Claude AI actually migrate a Tableau workbook to Power BI?

I tried it on a real file—calculated fields, a Rank table calc, a Top 3 filter, and a dual-axis Sales/Profit chart—and I'm showing every step, including the parts that broke and how they got fixed. The honest technical breakdown: Claude's live MCP connection to Power BI Desktop builds and validates the semantic model—tables, M queries, and DAX measures—in real time. It CANNOT touch report visuals; that's a hard architecture limit. Getting the actual charts built needs a second mechanism: saving as a PBIP project, zipping it, and having Claude edit the report JSON files directly.

Show Values Inside a Power BI Donut Chart 🎯 August 2026

Power BI Donut Charts just got a useful upgrade.

In the Power BI August 2026 update, you can now show a value directly in the center of a Donut Chart without needing to overlay a separate Card visual.

Center value for Donut Chart (Generally Available)

Donut charts can now display a value in the center. Enable the center value option and it shows up right in the middle.

You control the details in the formatting pane: value format, display units, and font. You can add an optional label above or below the value, place an image above or below it, or change the background fill or image of the center. If you need something other than the total, just add a custom measure to the center value in the formatting pane.

The center value stays in sync with your data. Filtering, cross-highlighting, drill-down, and selecting a slice all update it automatically. And because it lives inside the visual, it stays aligned when you resize the report, view it on mobile, or open it on a dashboard. It also works with screen readers.

To add a center value, select your donut chart, open the formatting pane, and turn on Center value.

Is Power BI Dead? Is Microsoft Fabric only a Data Analytics platform?

Microsoft Fabric is known for Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, Data Science, Real-Time Analytics, and Power BI. But with Fabric Apps, there's more to think about beyond traditional analytics.

In this video, I show how to create a Microsoft Fabric App using the Rayfin SDK and how modern development tools can be used to build interactive applications directly around your Fabric data.

Here's what we cover:

What are Microsoft Fabric Apps?

Introduction to the Rayfin SDK

Exploring the Fabric App user interface

Developing a Fabric App using Visual Studio Code

Using GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted development

Building a reporting experience inside a Fabric App

Creating a Data Entry Sales Application

Adding a Semantic Model experience to the same application

And finally, the big question: Is Microsoft Fabric becoming more than a Data Analytics platform? And is Power BI dead? 👀

I sketched a rough wireframe of a dashboard I wanted—no DAX, no data model, just a layout idea. Then I handed it to Claude AI connected to Power BI Desktop through MCP and watched it build the actual dashboard: creating the semantic model, writing every measure from scratch, and turning a static sketch into a working, interactive report. This is the wireframe-to-dashboard workflow in full — how Claude reads a visual mockup, maps it to real fields and calculations, and produces DAX measures on its own without me writing a single line.
