Welcome to the Power BI Community Show!
This is a live show hosted by the Community Program Manager for Power BI, Kelly Kaye. She is passionate about the Power BI Community, co-founder of the Power BI Women Summit, and a Power BI user herself.
On this episode, Kelly will speak with Will Thompson who will talk about recent Power BI event updates. With different segments each episode, you'll want to make sure to check out future episodes as well!

Love the new field parameters, keep these great developments coming
The demo on the world electricity usage is amazing! I look forward to watching the webnair/video on how you build it up!
The field parameters are really great and is enabling us to finally make very dynamic reports to quickly serve our very diverse userbase (I am in education sector, everyone is asking for different reports).
Basically we are making a fully dyamic page that function almost like personalized visual, with the benefit of
- more customizable and easier to train end user
- ability to re-organize dimensions in a way that makes sense to end user (rather than being limited by data model design)
A bug?
Something I have discovered, when I add a hierachy to the filed parameters (by adding manually to the dax table), it messes up with the order of selection
Category A
- Dimension 1
- Dimension 2
- Dimension 3
Category B
- Dimension 4
- Dimension 5
- Dimension 6
The order is messed up when I choose 3 or more dimension.
Someone else has also reported this

A request
Is it possible the let us access the method used to dynamically get the dimensions selected, when creating virtual tables in DAX? Or will this be impossible unless it is implemented in TOM?
The problem still persist in the june update
I love the fact that Will likened field parameters to bookmark, in terms of how revolutionary it is. I was in a live stream just some few days ago and we kinda agreed that it really isn't very ... 🫣 to change what already works with some shiny new feature.
Made a lot of sense then, especially for someone like me that is just beginning to know enough about PowerBi to know that I don't know enough 🤓
So with bookmarks being one of my favourite things, I sure will be trying my hands on Field parameters. . . this week. DAX can wait for some few more days (not like I won't take any excuse to look away from DAX 🤪!)
What is the search hint to find the Electricity report on the Gallery?
That worked! Thanks Kelly!

Field parameters are awesome, reduce lot of time spent on creating dynamic dimension selection within report. I wish this was implemented in TOM, not at the reporting layer, so that users need not have to create these Field parameters in every individual report. Still awaiting for "Named Sets" feature for many years, which is very common in other BI tools!
Hi Bharath,
Thanks for sharing your feedback! Unfortunately we don't have near-term plans to extend field parameter to the TOM. If enough demand we can consider for future improvements.
Hmm, "named set" is in Excel pivot tables. Probably left over from MDX.
Yes, Power BI lacks these useful features.
Late in joining the call but already my mind is blown....mi77 is WILL upside down???
Yeah! Nothing more complicated than that! Picture 16 year-old me (shouldn't be hard, everyone says I don't age, but I had BAD HAIR back then) joining a Quake server online and having to choose a name... I think I was MI77IVW in some places where I used my full name 😄
Totally! I also didn't realize that! 🙂
This is news we can use! Also a member of that 'I learned from Will' club btw.
Good to see Will! Still not used to commenting here rather than in YouTube. Curious to see if anyone can make DAX easier.
Check out Goodly. Seems to be helping me.
