hi we only have a limited amount of experience as our gateway currently resides on our dw sql server.
as we move in a more intelligent direction, and introduce 2 standalone servers in a failover config, without additional workloads, do the new machines need to be sql servers or just regular servers? we already know from separate posts in this forum how much horsepower the failover items need and the story on drivers.

@db042190 The only restriction on gateway servers is that they shouldn't be domain controllers. They do not have to be SQL servers, just regular servers.
Hi @db042190
That sounds like a great step as you move in a more intelligent and scalable direction.
After reviewing your scenario, I can confirm that the two new failover machines do not need to be SQL Servers. They only need to be Windows servers (or VMs) that meet the on-premises data gateway system requirements. Once installed, you can configure them together as a gateway cluster to provide high availability and failover, while your DW SQL Server continues to run on its own separate server.
also you can check this issue which is similar to yours:

If this helps please mark my answer as Solution and drop a Kudos.👍
