hi, i'm looking ahead a bit as our dev machine is a sqls server vm
we are going to clone an existing report whose SM depends on a refresh of relational dw tables.
what is going to happen when we go to connect pbi for the first time to our dev sql vm? I know its cloud to cloud but cant help thinking we have to set up something special.

Hi @db042190
It depends on where SQL VM is hosted.
So, if it is Azure SQL VM treated as on-premises where you need on-premises Data Gateway. Power BI Service cannot directly access private VMs without a gateway.
If it is Azure SQL Database, then no gateway needed. You can connect using credentials of server name and database based post getting access to you.
If VM is in another cloud or private network then Gateway is required.
