When I use now() as a measure in desktop if give the correct time when I publish to powerbi service I get a time that is several hours later. Any ideas?
I am using direct query connection

This is a known gap. The time zone in the service is effectively always set to UTC. See: Timezone not displaying correctly in Cloud service.

I'm guessing time zone issue. Perhaps check your time zone setting in your O365 tenant?
