Hi, today i went to download a semantic model to the desktop from a ws in which i have admin. i was always able to do this to get the report down in the desktop. But today i get the error you see below eventhough the desktop is already installed on my pc.
so i went to the desktop thinking i could download but when i download a semantic model that way all i get is the data source with no report.
i would ask our admin for help if i understood why this is happening and where this is going.
the best i can tell my desktop version is as follows...

Boy was this embarrassing and i almost eleveated it to a couple of managers and directors.
I'm only reading between the lines here and dont claim to be an expert in any way. When suddenly the download option from the ellipsis went absent on a model or two and after taking seriously some of what was said here, i made the stupid decision of using that down arrow you see in my image and then choosing desktop thinking that was for downloading the model and/or report in focus at the moment. i doubt its true that the service tries to download the desktop when all you are trying to do is to download a model or report.
i poked around a little andlearned that there are certain limitation (including volume if im reading it correctly) in downloading models for sure, maybe reports too. and under those conditions the ellipsis doesnt show the download option in ws's in which you have the right to expect ceratin things. i'll get in the habit when i dont see download under the ellipsis to use file->download instead. and assume certain limitations are POSSIBLY going to dictate how well i succeed.

Yes, if possible do not download PBI desktop from the store, download it directly from that link.

1. why is ms trying to install the desktop (or whatever its trying to do) when all i'm doing is downloading from the service a semantic model on a pc that already has the desktop installed? i have the ability to install it if thats the issue. i assume if its trying to install its because maybe i dont have the latest version?

Thank you very much for your reply. Power BI periodically checks that the current version is up to date. The current error could be that Power BI detected that the update was restricted by your computer policy and then this error appeared.

thanks jianpeng, but why all of a sudden? i've been here at my current job for about 8 months and havent seen this occur before.

The automatic checking for updates behavior occurs when you download Power BI through the Windows Store. You can also download it separately and it will not automatically try to update. If your current version is from the Windows Store, you can try uninstalling it and downloading it here:

ok, when i get a few minutes i'll try downloading the desktop myself as admin. But here is whats been going on since yesterday...
1. our tech guy opened up the store to me. Its unclear if thats to my admin or regular acct as he seems to have changed opinions since yesterday.
2. while our tech guy was "opening the flood gates on my pc to the store" he convinced himself that he downloaded the latest desktop from the store. but as i look today i still have the same version as what i had when i posted. he also thought that two instances of desktop ended up on my pc (one from before and one from opening the flood gates) but i already told him today that after searching for apps on my pc i didnt see any evidence of that.
3. nonetheless, i tried a download again today and while the error looks different (see below) , the net effect is the same.
4. i ran chrome as admin as a shot in the dark. of course my work email came up and i entered the pswd i use in my regular acct thinking there's no way the service would know of my admin pswd when the context is my email address. and then i tried a download and interstingly pbi the service just sat there doing nothing.
5. i may have to argue with him but currently that tech guy is saying there is n way to open the store to my regular acct.
thx but i'm just trying to download a semantic model and /or report from the service. i'll try to wait for jijanpeng's response to why all of a sudden.

Thank you very much for your reply. Whether your computer security policy has changed in the last 8 months or whether the Microsoft store is working. The current issue may be caused by the Microsoft store not working properly.
This problem can be caused by changes in the system environment, policies, and networks. For example, some system settings have been changed due to the installation of some security software.
Are you currently able to address this in the latest version?
As the super user said, you can download Desktop from the Power BI official website.

thx jianpeng and super user. I downloaded the desktop from superuser's link running as my admin. now when i switch to my regular userid and search for apps etc, i see pbi desktop with the familiar 3 bar icon as an app and what appears to be a download line for desktop as well.
when i click the 3 bar app, desktop opens (same as on task bar) and now its version is different than both i previously posted namely Version: 2.130.930.0 64-bit (June 2024). This is nuts.
it may be time for an MS ticket. Bottom line is that when i download a report from the service (probably applies to semantic model too) i get the same newer look error about the store being blocked.
in my naive sort of way i see 3 choices. 1. talk my tech's boss into opening the store for my regular user id also if its even possible. 2. make yet an additional or changed entry in Azure AD that associates my tenant with an email address to use my admin acct. 3. open a ticket with MS because i dont think we know what we are doing. I have no doubt that a policy change caused all this but at the moment i have no idea what that change was.
