does an orwcle data source require a gateway?

I will be reporting against an Oracle data source.
do I still require a vm with Oracle drivers installed, and the powerbi gateway, in order to make this work?

it seems like a lot of hassle and addition of points of failure.
was hoping powerbi would just allow entering of the relevant data to connect to Oracle, instead of requireing infrastructure.

@Knud is quite right. Since the Oracle data source isn't from MS, I'm afraid the infrastructure is necessary. (The Oracle client can't be included in the Power BI directly.)

If you only use Power BI Desktop you don't need the Power BI gateway. But you need to install driver software (oracle client)  to make a connection: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-connect-oracle-database

If you use Power BI Service you need the Power BI gateway to refresh. Then you must have a server and install all the software (gateway and oracle client): https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem-manage-oracle
