dataset cannot refresh in service after i published it from desktop

hello everyone,

I have postgres database that managed in the cloud in 'digitalOcean' platform.

I was able to connect successfully the database with power bi desktop.

After i published it to power bi service, i tried to refresh the dataset, but i got this error:
'Failed to test the connection to your data source. Please retry your credentials'

I tried to enter the credentials (same credentials that i entered in power bi desktop) and it still can't connect.

Has anyone encountered this before and know the solution? (I can attach screenshots if required...)

Thanks,

Dan

Hi @dankofman5 ,

“Please retry your credentials”, might be due to a few reasons. Here are some potential solutions:

1.Make sure that the credentials you’re using are correct. The credentials you use in Power BI service need to be the same as the ones you used in Power BI Desktop.

2.The error could be due to the Npgsql data provider not being found. You can download and install the latest MSI from here. After installation, restart your machine and try connecting Power BI to PostgreSQL again.

3.If you’re using an on-premises data gateway, make sure it’s installed and configured correctly. Also, ensure that Npgsql is installed on the same machine where the data gateway is installed.

4.Check if there are any firewall or network restrictions that might be preventing Power BI service from connecting to your PostgreSQL database.

5.Optimize Your Data Model: If your data model is very complex or the size of the dataset is very large, it might cause timeout errors. Try to optimize your data model and reduce the size of your dataset.

Best regards.

Thanks for your reply!

But if my data source is in the cloud and not on the local server, do I still need to use a data gateway and the Npgsql? I don't need to just use the cloud connection?

By the way, when I try to insert the credentials (same credentials that i entered in power bi desktop) i got this error:

Failed to update data source credentials: An error happened while reading data from the provider: 'A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond'

I would be very happy for help!

Thanks,

Dan
