cannot remove direct access from semantic model

hello

we have a semantic model deployed to separate workspace

then users can connect to this model in live connection and make their reports, which they in turn publish to their workspaces/shared workspaces;

im reviewing regularly the access to the semantic model and i noticed that i myself am listed in the direct access to the model;

im admin and im member of it admin group that has admin rights on the workspace of the model

so i dont need any additional paths to grant me access

i tried to remove the direct access and im unable to; it just dont do anything;

im not sure why is this happening? any tips would be appreciated

thanks!

Hi @MamaHani2,

Since your access is granted via the entra group (admins), but you are still listed under direct access, it might be due to previously assigned permissions or tenant-level settings, please follow below steps:

  • Check if the direct access is assigned manually, open the Manage Permissions pane and verify if your user account is listed under Direct Access separately. If listed, try removing it again. If removal is not possible, it may be inherited through a backend policy.
  • Verify Tenant-Level settings, check in the Power BI Admin Portal , go to Tenant Settings, and look for any settings under "Admin API Settings" or "Workspace Settings" that might grant automatic access to semantic models for service admins.

If you still face the issue, I suggest you to please raise a support ticket.

Hi @MamaHani2  - Since you're also part of an IT Admin group, your access to the semantic model might be inherited from this group's permissions. Power BI combines individual and group permissions, which could explain why your access persists.

Power BI automatically grants you access to all resources within the workspaces you manage, even if you don't explicitly assign access to yourself.This access cannot be removed manually because it's tied to your admin role.

Point 1:

Go to the Workspace Settings for the semantic model's workspace.

Check if your admin role (either individual or via the IT Admin group) is granting access.

Point 2 at permission level:

  • Open the Manage Permissions pane for the semantic model.
  • Look for inherited access via groups (e.g., IT Admin group) or workspace roles.
  • If access is inherited, you won’t be able to remove your individual access unless the group/workspace permissions are adjusted.

Point 3:

  • Check who owns the semantic model dataset.
  • If your account is the owner, reassign ownership to another admin or service account:
    1. Go to the Dataset Settings in the workspace.
    2. Reassign ownership under the Dataset Owner section.

I hope these details works.

Hi

thank you very much for your reply;

the access to the semantic model worskpace is granted via entra group; i.e. there is an etnra group 'admins' and im member of this group (plus several other persons); this group is given admin access on the workspace; no other member of the group is listed in the direct access; im not the owner of the model and neither is any other member of admin group;  im not sure how i check if 'direct access' is inherited;
