XMLA in SSMS 18 - no cubes were found error

Hi, I am trying to connect to Power BI Service via XMLA in SSMS 18, following MSFT instructions. I can see the databases, but when I try to create an MDX query I get an error "Error loading metadata: No cubes were found". Internet search turned-out only single topic-related post from 2006, where they are reffering to a setting "<visible>false</visble>", which I have no idea where it would be in Power BI Service.

Last week, I have successfully connected to XMLA endpoints via SSMS, and executed super simple MDX query. Today, it does not work anymore, workspace is the same as last week. Double checked Settings required (Premium capacity, Analyze in Excel, Enable XMLA Endpoints). Also, I tried with colleague, and he gets the same error.

Mainly, I wanted to try out the new Power BI Report Builder, which should be able to connect to PBI XMLAs.

MDX doesn't show anything because the Initial Catalog is not set on that connection. You can get MDX to work in SSMS, if you create an MDX Query by selecting the database node (not the server node).

In Power BI Report Builder, by default you'll use DAX and that works.  There's a bug with switching to MDX that we're looking into right now.

hi, @vadlamudibi

You may refer to this:

and if you still have the problem, you'd better create a support ticket in Power BI Support to get further help.
