Workplace Power BI Gateway question

Hi,

 

I've been using Power BI Desktop for the past two years or so and I have a pretty solid understanding of it.

 

Somewwhat recently my workplace started taking advantage of the Power BI App enviornment.  The way we have it set up is that the three members on our team all have our own personal Workspaces.  And each of us has a Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode) established.

 

This allows each of us to create Power BI Desktop reports and publish them to our own personal workspaces.  We can also push these reports to MS Teams chats and discuss them.

 

We also have one Premium workspace.  This is where I start to get a bit confused.  Originally, the Premium workspace was tied to one of our team members (lets call him Tim).  Meaning, it was only using Tim's data gateway.  While all members had read access/view access to the premium workspace, only Tim could refresh that datasets residing on the Premium workspace.

 

The problem we're running in to now is that Tim has left our company and now obviously his data gateway is no longer working.  I have tried going in to the premium data gateway and have tried 'rolling it over' to my Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode) but it does not show as an option.

 

It says there are no data gateways available.  It wants me to add another NEW data gateway.  So I'm confused...because I already have one...

 

Why can I not use my Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode)....that already works on my personal gateway?

 

I'm concerned that if I were to try to install a new data gateway (like the app is suggesting) installing a new gateway will cause all kinds of issues for me and my Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode) that is already established and working.

 

Can someone please explain to me how to move forward here?  

 

I need to make the premium workspace linked to my gateway.

    Hi Anonymous ,

     

    There is a difference between a personal gateway and a "standard" or "corporate" or "service" gateway.  The two shall never meet.  They are separate entirely. 

    Therefore, if you have a report and you publish that report and you want to use the service gateway then you have to change the settings of the dataset to use that standard gateway.

    The standard gateway is the best one to use anyway as a rule since that gateway is not dependent on an individual's personal machine and sign on.

      Thank you for te response.

       

      My follow up question is:  Can installing a second, different type of gateway cause any kind of issue?

       

      For me presonally, I already have the Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode) established.

       

      If I install the Standard Gateway...will have two Gateways interfere with each other?

        Hey Anonymous ,

         

        Gateways themselves (the installation) do not interfere with each other if they are on different computers/servers.  You can have a personal gateway on one or more individual's computers within an organization AND a standard gateway installed for the organization (or clusters of standard gateways if needed).  The interference is if you are having them refresh the same thing.  Only one of them should be used to refresh a specific data source/data set.  There are a number of reasons for this that I won't get into here.

        When you publish the report to the service, then pick the gateway that you will use (preferrably the standard gateway since that should be the more reliable one in regards to being "on" all the time).
