Working with Datasets - Weighing Premium Option Features

Trying to understand if I can leverage using two features at once, or If I have to choose between the two. I think I have to choose between the two, as it stands today.

1. Utilizing Deployment Pipelines feature

ADVANTAGE: Gain the speed and ease of Dev -> Test -> Prod rapid iterating and deployment

DISADVANTAGE: 1 limitation includes calling out you may get unexpected results (which I am) when you do not deploy dataset along with report/dashboard content through workspaces.

Disadvantage Source:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/deployment-pipelines-get-started

2. Utilizing seperate workspaces (dataset specific workspaces and report specific workspaces)

ADVANTAGE: better govern and manage who has permissions to edit datasets

DISADVANTAGE: Deployment Pipelines cannot be leveraged to aid in rapid development life cycle iteration if your dataset is intentionally left in a workspace specific to datasets only, and should not be included in deployments across workspaces.

ADVANTAGE Source:

Diving in deep into documentation "Planning a Power BI Enterprise Deployment". https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/whitepapers

Am I understanding this correctly?

    Hi Anonymous ,

To be precise, pipeline deployment is a tool, and it also needs to place the data set in a workspace, which must be a premium capacity workspace.

So Pipeline deployment requires premium capacity. If you need to enable creators to develop and test Power BI content before users use it, it is recommended that you use pipeline deployment.
If you just publish and share reports or dashboards, it is recommended that you put the data set in the workspace.
