Are there any data sources other than AS Tabular that require the end user to have permissions set up on the backend, or is that the only one?

Other On Premises sources that go through the Personal Gateway will connect with whatever account you have set for the Personal Gateway (for an Admin on the deskop), or with your windows account if youa re not an admin on the box.
The AS Connector is the only option right now that will actually pass the user from the cloud side to the back end data source.
AS is the only way to have row level security. Every other dataset presents data in the context of the data set creator.
