We have this error message DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError since a couple of days

We've been having this issue since a couple of days.

The error message is as follow:

{"error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","pbi.error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","parameters":{},"details":[],"exceptionCulprit":1}}} Table:

We upgraded our on premise data gateway to the lastest version today and it still gives this error message on scheduled and manual refreshes.

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

We installed the September version of the gateway and it now works for our refresh.

We're experiencing this issue as well, with 4 or 5 semantic models (out of 9).

  • Intermittant scheduled refresh failures for semantic models that have never had issues with scheduled refreshes before.
  • Manual refresh seems to work all of the time.
  • Some refresh schedules will occasionally work.
  • The refresh schedule is lean, with no more than 1 refresh in a 24 hour period per semantic model.
  • Gateway status is reporting good.

Our specific error for all semantic model failures:

{"error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","pbi.error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","parameters":{},"details":[],"exceptionCulprit":1}}}

We have updated the Gateway (March 2025), Restarted the server, Restarted the Gateway, Assigned more resources to Gateway server. Still seeing issues.

Seems Microsoft have acknowleged the error:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-au/fabric/known-issues/known-issue-844-intermittent-refresh-failure-g...

I am reluctant to roll back to the September Gateway version. Will wait until the next Gateway update.

Hi @vinny1986,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. After reviewing the issue of receiving the error message ‘DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError’ for the past few days, we have outlined some steps that might help resolve the issue:

It looks like the error message ‘DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError’ is related to Power BI and occurs when a task is cancelled during the data refresh process. This issue may persist even after upgrading the on-premises data gateway to the latest version.

  • The error frequently occurs when a task is cancelled during the data refresh process, often due to network issues, server overload, or conflicts with other operations.
  • Please ensure there are no network issues or server overloads that could be causing the task cancellation. Review the gateway logs for any errors that might provide further details.
  • Clear the cache and all permissions, then sign in again and refresh the report in Power BI Desktop. Publish the report to a different workspace and check if the issue persists.
  • Additionally, create a new sample test report with the same data, refresh it in Power BI Desktop, and publish it to a newly created workspace in Power BI Service to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Ensure that the gateway and data sources are correctly configured and meet the minimum requirements. Sometimes, moving the gateway to a different server or updating the server can help resolve the issue.
  • Some users have resolved the issue by restarting the on-premises gateway services and the servers they are running on. Additionally, checking the source systems for any recent changes and ensuring they are functioning correctly can be beneficial.

Hi @vinny1986 ,

The DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError occurs when the Power BI On-Premises Data Gateway cancels a query execution. This usually happens due to:

  • Gateway connection issues
  • Long-running queries causing timeouts
  • High data volume affecting performance

If your scheduled and manual refreshes are failing, try these steps:

  1. Check Gateway Status → Ensure it's online in Manage Gateways.
  2. Increase Timeout → Admin Portal > Tenant Settings > Dataset Default Timeout.
  3. Optimize Queries → Reduce data volume or improve SQL query performance.
  4. Check Logs → Review On-Prem Gateway Logs for detailed errors.
  5. Restart Gateway → Restart the service in Gateway Settings.
