Want Weekly backup of my Power BI report & dataset .

Hello Community,

I have a requirement to create a weekly backup of my Power BI application, including both the report and dataset. However, there's a challenge as the dataset size in the Power BI service is reported as 18 GB.

I'm seeking advice on how to effectively download the entire dataset to maintain a backup. Additionally, I'm interested in exploring any potential automated processes to streamline this backup procedure.

Any insights and recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi @Sampath_Santosh ,

It sounds like you want to backup your Power BI dataset and report on a weekly basis. There are a few possible ways to do that, depending on your Power BI license and configuration.

If you have a Power BI Premium or Premium per User (PPU) license, you can use the Backup and Restore feature that was announced in August 20211. This feature allows you to use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Analysis Services cmdlets for PowerShell, and other tools to perform backup and restore operations in Power BI via XMLA endpoints2. You can also configure an Azure Data Lake Gen2 (ADLS Gen2) storage account to store your dataset backups online, or download them offline using Azure Storage Explorer or PowerShell cmdlets3.

If you do not have a Power BI Premium or PPU license, you can use the Export feature in the Power BI service to export your report as a .pbix file, which will include the dataset as well. However, this option has some limitations, such as the maximum file size of 10 GB and the inability to export reports that use DirectQuery or live connection. You can also use PowerShell scripts or third-party tools to automate the export process.
