Visuals not loading for users when viewing dashboard connected to semantic model

Hi,

We have a cube that sits in a fabric capacity. Dashboards / Reports are built either directly off the cube OR via a semantic model. Users consume the content via the workspace app. Users are subject to RLS on the cube data (either restricted / unrestricted).

Cube > Dashboard

Cube > Semantic > Dashboard

We have an issue where dashboard viewers are unable to see visuals in dashboards that are connected via a semantic model. The visuals in these dashboards do not load up. However, when we remove the created measures and disconnect the semantic model from the dashboard, all visuals load up fine (this is sub optimal as we lose any dashboard specific measures).

In summary, users are unable to see data in any dashboards where a semantic model sits on top of the live cube connection. They can see data when the dashboard is connected to the live cube.

We've given users Workspace Viewer / App / Build on the relevant semantic models in the workspace but that does not work.

We are struggling to resolve this, as everything suggests the use of a semantic model should not interfere with security or users ability to view content. Any guidance is very much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me - to clarify, yes we build reports on the semantic model (cube) - when we don't add measures to the report, everything works perfectly - when we add measures, and this additional connection is created, visuals with theses new measures do not display.

Hi,@JAFpwrBI_002
I am glad to help you.

According to your description, there is no way to display visual when report/dashboard is connected to semantic model, but everything is fine when dashboard is connected directly to Cube.

Below are some of my suggestions for troubleshooting your problem description:

If you are on Power BI Service and the visual in the report can not be displayed normally

  1. Check whether your gateway connection is normal, if the connection is not successful, then the report can not correctly get data from the multidimensional model

You can view the specific gateway log information through the On-Premises data gateway application

open the option : “Additional logging” and click the “Export logs”

  1. Check whether the measure on the service can work properly.

Because the measure calculates the data in the current filtering context, and you are using live connections mode, you must get the data through the database: when displaying visuals, you will get the live data through the query statement of the data source.

You can trace the data through SQL Server Profiler.

like this :

The specific query statement can be traced in SQL Server Profiler

Please check whether the corresponding query statement can be traced correctly when you open the report/dashboard on the service.

If not, there may be a problem with the gateway connection, you need to check the following gateway logs to troubleshoot the problem.

I don't understand some parts of your description, the following is my summary after understanding your needs

For what you have described:

Cube > Dashboard

Cube > Semantic > Dashboard

The creation of a dashboard in Power BI needs to be done on the power bi service, i.e., visually pinning multiple reports to a dashboard, which can't be built in any other way.

Here is my test: (Dashboard/report creation on service needs to be based on semantic model)

So by Dashboard do you mean the dashboard in power BI?

So I think Cube > Dashboard refers to the process of creating a report in power BI desktop

 Cube > Semantic > Dashboard
It means to “publish to the service” the report on the desktop, and the system automatically generates the corresponding semantic model.

The problem is that the data source that the report connects to is the multidimensional model in Analysis Services, and the connection mode used is live connections.

In the power BI desktop, the display is normal: you can create measures and display visualizations normally.

But when the report is published to the service, there is a problem (the system will automatically generate the corresponding semantic model)

The report/dashboard doesn't display visual properly.

Here I have some questions about your description:

You said that removing the connection between the dashboard and the semantic model and deleting the created measure will restore the dashboard to normal, but this statement does not fulfill the definition of power BI: since the report and the dashboard must depend on the semantic model.

So I think your problem may be that the report/dashboard is not getting the data correctly on the power BI service (you are using live connections) so you have to make a gateway connection!

These are my guesses about your description, if you can provide some specific screenshots, such as disconnecting the semantic model from the dashboard as you said, or some screenshots/error messages where the visual is not displaying properly.

The information you provided will help to solve your problem.

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Hi,@JAFpwrBI_002
I am glad to help you.

Thank you for your reply.

Is your problem solved, according to the new data you provided, you are using the second semantic model in the inheritance view and the visual is not displaying properly.

I don't have a way to reproduce what you did: create a new semantic model using the first semantic model, and create a report using the new semantic model.

(Are you using a hybrid model, where you add a new data source and build a new measure/calculate column on top of the original semantic model?)

Can you please share how you are using the second semantic model in the inheritance view to create the report, that would be helpful in solving your problem.

I found some documentation about using multidimensional model as a data source, hope it will help you
