VNET data gateway and access to the on-prem

Has anyone tried a scenario in which the vnet data gateway is used to access the on-prem data sources?
I am referring to the scenario in which the Virtual Machine in the given vnet is able to communicate to the on-prem.

The documentation does not provide explicit statement on whether there are any caveats. This https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/vnet/data-gateway-faqs#is-there-any-way-to-connect-from-the-subnet-of-one-vnet-to-the-data-source-of-another-another-vnet- could be read that this should work as long as routing is provided to the target.
