Using Excel as dataset in Report Server

Hi All,

In one of my PowerBI report , only datasource I have is an excel file .

However whenever I publish this data to server , users cannot see the report as my organization does not support external file such as excel as data source , we currently do it only through SQL.

I was wondering if there is a way out ? so that I can use that excel file as my data source when report is published to server . YOur help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Aaditya

  • Hi AadityaH

If you can place the Excel file on OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online, or Google Drive, or AWS drive or Dropbox, or some similar online repository, you should be able to connect to it with Power BI and then have it refresh without needing a Power BI Gateway.

    Hope this helps

    Hi AadityaH ,

    Agree with Burningsuit.

Power BI reports can connect to a number of data sources. Some data sources are available in Power BI Desktop for Power BI Report Server, but aren't supported when published to Power BI Report Server.

Also,it does not support OAuth-based authentication for model refresh. Some data sources such as Excel or Access databases make use of a separate step like File or Web to connect to data.

You can try with the methods that Burningsuit has mentioned.

    Hope it helps,
