Users with view access on workspace can't view data in report
Hi,
I have an issue with users not being able to see data they should with view access on the workspace.
Summary:
-User is granted "viewer" role on the workspace
-Data is coming from a direct query on semantic model in the workspace that is sourced from tables in a fabric warehouse in the same workspace
-User can see if I change it to "contributor". (User can also see data when I change it back to "viewer" for a while, but after a time (hours to days) they lose that permission again)
-Errors are like "Something's wrong with one or more fields or you don't have required permissions:"
-if I create a power BI report in desktop, import some tables, and grant the same viewer access in the workspace, it works fine (but isn't what I need/am trying to do)
they do have build permission. What they were missing is ReadAll on the warehouse, same as for a lakehouse in this one:
seems like a pain to have to grant a user viewer and then go into the warehouse settings and add another separate permission.

Hi jbaz does user have Build permission on the semantic model ?
With DirectQuery to a semantic model, Viewer alone is often not enough for stable access. Contributor works because it implicitly grants Build.

Yes, indeed, since you are working with Direct Query users must have access to the source as well.

When a semantic model uses DirectQuery against a Fabric Warehouse, Power BI passes the viewing user's identity through to the Warehouse at query time. The user therefore needs not just Viewer role on the workspace but also explicit read access on the Warehouse itself.
