User-created Dashboards in App Owns Data Embed Scenario

My company is exploring the possibilities of Power BI reports and dashboards for a multi-tenanted application, where we'd embed Power BI for our customers.

Would it be possible to embed it in such a way that allows our customers to create their own dashboards using the visuals on reports that we provide?

  • HI JoePassmore ,

I guess this is a case of define "embed".  Normally, to "embed" a report means that you have made it where the user can use the functionality of what you present to them, but they can't do anything else - including build their own version.  (as represented here: Power BI embedded analytics overview | Microsoft Learn)

If you are really wanting to give customers the ability to create their own dashboard from a report, then you have to give them access to the report. If you are giving them access to the report, then you are probably giving them the access to more than you want to???

I would think if you want something truly interactive, you would have to build a separate workspace for each customer, set the workspace to have permissions for them (but I would turn off the permissions to let them get to your data - otherwise they could run a report for all the customers) to be able to create their own dashboard.  And, I would also use RLS to make sure that each customer stays in their own lane.

That idea might be feasible (but cumbersome) if you have maybe 10 or fewer customers but if you have lots of customers you are wanting to share with this would become an administrative nightmare.

Therefore, maybe your customers can be "bulked" in some way where you make 2 or 3 or 5 dashboards and give the appropriate rights and RLS to the appropriate type of dashboard?  That gives each type of customer their own thing but yet makes administrative less difficult.  And, then, I would only share it in the app and not in the workspace.
