Understanding difference personal gateway vs enterprise gateway

When a personal gateway is set up, it will use the connected computer's resources for volatile memory usage. The gateway runs as a service on the local computer, and it handles communication between the Power BI service and the on-premises data source.

In the case of the enterprise gateway, it uses a node's capacity for volatile memory usage. The enterprise gateway runs as a cluster of gateway nodes, and each node handles communication between the Power BI service and the on-premises data source.

There are several reasons why you might choose the personal gateway over the enterprise gateway:

1. Simplicity: The personal gateway is simpler to set up and manage, as it is installed on a single computer and does not require any additional infrastructure.

2. Cost: The personal gateway is free to use, while the enterprise gateway requires licensing.

3. Use Case: The personal gateway is designed for scenarios where you have a single on-premises data source that needs to be accessed by a few users or reports. The enterprise gateway is designed for larger organizations with multiple data sources and a larger number of users.

That being said, if you have both gateways available and you have a larger organization with multiple data sources and users, it would be recommended to use the enterprise gateway as it provides better scalability, reliability, and management capabilities. In summary, you should always try to use an Enterprise Gateway for production environments.
