Understanding Fabric Metrics App

Hello. 

I need some help undersatnding the Fabric Metric App, i have read the MS documentation, but failing to grasp some concepts

So i have been tasked to find out which workspace / model is being used the most on our premium capacity. 

 

On the Metric App, i see the items (14days) table which shows the Item, CU, Duration, Users, Performance Delta, item size, Billing type. 

I can sort this by CU(s)

 

First Question - What is a CU?. I understand its a Capacity Unit. I have a P2 capacty, which has 128 CUs ... What does this 128 mean

 

When i sort my table by CU (most CU's at the top), it shows me the below

 

 

I have removed the item details. 

 

So the first item is using 4619565.63 CUs.... What does this mean?. What is the maximum CUs i can use?  - This looking at the last 2 weeks, can i go back further?

 

What does the performance delta mean?, i.e. some of them are Amber - is this a concern?

 

My aim is just to find out the workspace / datasets that are consuming the most usage on the capacity.

  • CUs is like a currency, depending on the size of your capacity you get a certain number of CUs which is smoothed over a certain period. People have done some calculations on how many CUs you get exactly - you might find something on google in case you want to know.

     

    The top model is the one consuming the most resources indeed.

    There are only 14 days of data available by default - you need to build a custom solution to get more which is a hassle I think.

    The performance delta is the change in the performance over the last few weeks, a large minus indicates things are getting worse, this is why it is highlighted (amber).

     

    The sum of the CUs by workspace will tell you exactly what you want to know.

    First of all thanks Brunner_BI  and SaiTejaTalasila  for the quick reply and detailed explanation, allow me to add some details to this:

     

    A Capacity Unit (CU) represents the compute power available for a specific SKU (Service Key Unit). It measures the processing time in seconds for various operations within Power BI.

    The sum of CUs for a workspace or dataset reflects the total compute resources consumed by that workload.

    In your example, the first workspace uses 4619565.63 CUs over the specified time frame (14 days).

     

    Relationship:

    • If the workspace’s cumulative CUs exceed the capacity’s available CUs, you might experience performance issues or throttling.
    • If the workspace’s cumulative CUs are significantly lower than the capacity’s available CUs, you have spare capacity that can be utilized by other workloads.

      Thanks. This is helpful. 

       

      I would like to undertand what the sum of CUs on each workspace equate to. 

      E.g. The sum of CUs on the first workspace / dataset is 4619565.63 CUs

       

      I guess this goes back to your point above about working our how many CUs our capacity has.  The P2 capacity says we have  16 v cores and 128 CUs.. 

       

      How does the 128 CU's relate to the 4619565.63 CUs used by the first workspace?
