Unable to setup OnPremises Gateway on PowerBI.com

Hi community,

I am new to PowerBI Gateway setup. I hope you will be able to assist. My scenario is as follows:

1. We have a SQL Server instance set up on Server A.

2. I have created a dashboard from data from the above server in Power BI Desktop on my local machine, so I have a .pbix file.

3. I have a Power BI Pro license.

I would like to publish/share this report with users of my organisation, and have the data auto refresh each morning. I am currently emailing the Excel extracts to them every day. We have an Azure tenant, but I am not ready yet to pay the monthly $750 in order to set up  PowerBI Embedded on an Azure workspace, and rather want to look at going the MS Teams publishing route first. So I have also done the following:

1. Installed Power BI Gateway for on premises data on Server A (also where the SQL server resides). No other Power BI applications is running on Server A.

2. I have created a workspace on https://app.powerbi.com/ and published/share the Dashboard and Dataset on the workspace, please see below:

The challenge I am facing is that I am unable to schedule a dataset refresh as I do not know how to tell the shared/published dashboard to use the gateway I have set up on Server A?

Can someone please guide me on how to "connect" or add the Gateway Dataset on server A?

I am missing a step , but not sure where...

Any hints, tips or guidance to make this work will be much appreciated.

Regards

Hi @barnarp ,

I am wondering if the missed step might be the setup of the gateway within Power BI?  Have you gone to Settings - Manage Connections and Gateways  and confirmed that it was set up there?  And, is there are Data Source setup for that data you are using? Also, do you have permissions to use it after it is installed?

This article will probably help:

On-premises data gateway - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

And, particularly I am thinking you are looking for the "Use A Gateway" and particular the article related to step 4.

Hi @collinq ,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my question.

I read throught the documentation again (slowly this time), and realised I set up the gateway with a different email address as what I am using for powerbi.com. Once I setup the gateway using my primary email address, I could see the gateway in my created workspace in powerbi.com and set it up accordingly.

Everything works now, thank you very much.

Regards

Pierre
