Unable to setup Gateway for Amazon Athena in PowerBI Service.
Thanks Sunil for creating the topic. 🙂 I am looking into this issue with Sunil.
Perhaps I will share some additional details from my end as well.
We used to use a generic "ODBC" connection before in PowerBI desktop to Amazon Athena.
What we have noticed is that query folding is not properly working then. Since we want to enable incremental refresh, it needs to properly pass the rangestart and rangeend date parameters back into the Athena query.
We have noticed, while using the PowerBI "athena" connector, this seems to work better in PowerBI desktop. So on our local laptops we have an athena simba odbc connection, configured with a client and a secret. It nicely works.
But now it comes, while trying to enable this functionality of the POwerBI gateway machine, the connectivity options are limited. The "basic" authentication option is missing (for entering clientid and secret). We can only choose OAUTH2 or Anonymous.
Does anyone know a working gateway configuration for the Athena dsn?

Hello,
I'm having the same problem here, exept right now I cant even find the "Amazon Athena" connector on the gateway datasorce options.
Anyone knows how to connect this through the gateway? The OBDC option should work with both the "OBDC" and "Amazon Athena" connectors? - Rashid_Saba1 year agoNew Member
Hi, sharing this post as I faced the similar challenge and it is solved now.
I can access data, both in Import & Direct Query mode via Athena. You need to, first setup OPDG (On Premises Data Gateways) as usual but on a seperate VM instance of E2.
Documentation around how to do it on Amazon could be cound on this LinkedIn post
Summary of Key Steps:
EC2 Instance (for VM hosting):
- Launch VM via AWS Workspace > Connect with Fleet Manager using key pair.
- Install On-Premises Data Gateway (Standard/Enterprise).
- Install ODBC Simba Athena Driver 1.x.
- Configure ODBC Authorization: Instance Profile (with full AWS access role).
Personal Workspace (Power BI Desktop + Service):
- Install ODBC Simba Athena Driver 1.x.
- Set Authorization Option: IAM Profile.
- Power BI Desktop: Get Data > Amazon Athena > DSN from ODBC.
- Power BI Service:
- Manage Gateway & Connections > Add New Connection:
- Gateway Cluster: OPDG connection name
- Connection Type: Amazon Athena
- DSN: Must match ODBC
- Authentication: Anonymous
- Privacy: Organizational
After publishing the report, the configured data source becomes selectable for use.
