Unable to save changes to semantic model on Power BI Service

I have a Power BI report published to the Power BI Service. It has a custom SQL query using an ODBC connection. I am trying to edit the connection to change a field in the query. In the power query preview the query successfully returns the expected results. I go to save the changes. It pops up with this box asking about the Native Database Queries

I click Run all but then I get this pop-up window that there was an error:

I have had the same issues with trying to edit another dashboard with a similar backend set up. Both refresh with no issue normally on Power BI service.

  • Hi calM,

The semantic model edit capabilities in the service are still not caught up to all the capabilities in Power BI Desktop. I recommend making the change in Power BI Desktop and republishing.

Yes, I am able to make the changes and fully refresh the report locally.

  • Hello calM ,

Generally this error happens when the query runs correctly inside PQ but fails semantic model is validated and loaded into the dataset.

Could you please check if there is removed column, changed datatype etc.?

From model view you can check table after_action. And look for fields with exclamation icons, measures refferring missing columns, relationship refferring to missing fields.

If this solved your issue, please mark it as the accepted solution. ✅

There was a column from the dataset that had been removed. I was replacing that column. I am able to make the changes locally and refresh the report. I had also just tried to edit another report where nothing had changed and got the same error.
