Unable to render paginated report

    This error usually means there’s a problem with the Power BI Service rendering your paginated report online. Since the report works fine locally in Report Builder but fails on the web, here are the most common causes and solutions:

    1. Data Source Connection Issues:
      The online service might not have access to your data source (for example, an on-premises database or gateway issue). Make sure the data source credentials are up-to-date and your gateway is online and configured properly.

    2. Query Timeout or Heavy Data:
      If your report pulls a large amount of data or complex queries, it might time out online even if it works locally. Try to filter the data, simplify queries, or increase server resources if possible.

    3. Service Outage or Change:
      Sometimes, Microsoft introduces changes or outages that can temporarily break rendering. Check Power BI Support for any active issues.

    What you can try:

    • Test with a smaller dataset or report page.

    • Re-upload the report to Power BI Service.

    • Refresh or re-enter your data source credentials in the Power BI Service.

    • Ensure your on-premises data gateway is running (if used).

    • Check if the problem occurs for other users too.

From what I understand, the most likely reason for the issue is that the query or report takes too long to run or load in the Power BI Service. This usually happens because the Power BI Service has stricter limits on time and resources for paginated reports compared to Report Builder. This is common with large datasets or complex reports.

Please try the following steps which may help fix the problem:

  1. In Report Builder, use TOP N filters (for example, TOP 1000) in your queries to reduce the amount of data and test if the report loads online.
  2. Break the report into smaller parts or sections using drill-through actions or views controlled by parameters.
  3. Enable diagnostics in Report Builder to check and compare the report loading time and query performance on your computer and on the web.
  4. While viewing the report in the browser, press F12 and go to the Network tab to see if there are any HTTP 500 or 504 errors or timeouts during loading.
